I have lots of memories of Mr. Bill, maybe because I'm the chef in the family, and not a vegetarian. I remember one time Williams and I had a surprise for him. We took him to the Amish Farmers Market in Laurel, Maryland. I know how much he loves ham steak and he loved it there. We took him to the huge meat counter, about a half a block long, and his eyes lit up like a kid at Christmas.
The counter had every kind of pork, beef, ham steak, and bacon he could imagine. I offered to buy him something but he couldn't make up his mind. I said, Mr. Bill, take your time because you're trying to put 10 pounds of sugar in a 5 pound bag.
He looked at me and smiled and said this reminds me of being home in Indiana. We found our way to the pastry counter too. Once again it was overwhelming and he couldn't decide what he wanted.
