Anima Bagchi was the original feminist of our bloodline who lived a life in the pursuit of truth and knowledge. Her dedication to uttering nothing but the truth has placed every single of her kids and grandkids under great duress at times! With her sharp wit and boundless humour, she held everyone responsible for their actions. Yes, her beauty was that she was so raw and honest… every day of her life.
She never missed a day without reading the newspapers (did I say reading? Some argue memorizing!) front to back; inside and out. She never missed a vote - yes, she was the generation that earned that right for women. She never missed a Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa episode. She never missed a birthday… each grandkid got the ceremonial puja at Kalibari… however scorching hot it may have been that day. She was a walking encyclopedia, devouring books of all genres and creed that chanced upon her. How did Stephen Hawking challenge Einstein’s theory of relativity? She definitely had a comment or two on that. And she also did what grandmas do best - she taught us to dream big, study hard, and go build your life on your own terms. Never compromise and be bold - that’s what she taught us.
less

And during these addas, she would always comment on how I had grown up, with the sort of innocence and wonder that only she had. I have been an adult for years now, but to know that someone somewhere in the world still actively remembered me as the kid who would refuse to go home, leaving behind her cousins, always made me feel a bit protected. With her gone, it feels like that protection is gone. Losing Didu and Mamidida in such quick succession have been difficult for all of us, but I love to think that wherever they are, Mamidida got a nice surprise to see her Hashi waiting, welcoming her Rangaboudi with that angelic smile. :) Are they still reading together the newspaper, or is Mamidida humming a song, while Didu is reading a book, or cooking? Or are they lying together, discussing about things and trading secrets that no one in the world knew except the two of them? As we grieve together, I feel a bit better knowing that they can rest together, in peace. less

I was barely in my twenties but had moved to the US and was living by myself. She had smiled and said - I am so glad that you have found such a friend in a foreign land. Whether you choose to marry him or not, you can decide later, but it makes me happy to know you have a friend to trust. Such were our discussions- whether it was analyzing The Kite Runner, or the vital importance of financial independence for women. As my sister put it, she was the original feminist of our bloodline. We lost her last week, and I miss her! less
