Benton was not long on this earth, only 20 years, but lived life to the fullest. From a young age, he was an adventurer, always seeking the next opportunity to explore. He participated in many sports including baseball, swimming, diving, hiking, snowboarding, skateboarding, skimboarding, and surfing. From a young age, he loved the ocean. Upon our move to Hawaii, he embraced the surfer lifestyle.
His smile was contagious and genuine. That smile, with his squinty eyes, made a connection to all around him. He was a true friend to everyone. He taught us so much about living—to live in the moment and be truly present with those around him.
Benton was a sophomore at the University of Kentucky studying kinesiology. His career goal was to become an athletic trainer, because of his love of sports. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. This brotherhood became the centerpiece of his University of Kentucky experience.
In lieu of flowers, a Go Fund Me has been set up to honor his life.
With the funds raised, a foundation will support interests close to his heart. As a teenager, Benton participated in numerous mission trips with church; the last two mission trips were to Belize through Pathlight International. There, he helped build a school and tutor children. The foundation will provide opportunities for children to attend high school with the hope of ending the cycle of poverty.
Sports were also a mainstay of Benton’s life. Additional funding will grant students at Henry Perrine Baldwin High School opportunities to participate in swimming and diving.
