Founded in 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation’s mission is simple: we inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. This mission is the driving force behind all of our work in community forestry, large-scale forest restoration, rain forest preservation, disaster recovery, and education.
We are proud to be the largest nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to planting trees. The impact we make is possible thanks to more than 1 million members and corporate partners as well as a strong global network of dedicated programmatic partners. less

Bernard was born in Cincinnati on September 2, 1946, one of four children to the late George and Elizabeth (Gray) Blakey.
He spent his young life in Cincinnati, Ohio, playing high school sports and running around the neighborhood looking for fun. Bernard enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving several overseas active duty deployments, including in war time, and many years as a reservist. He was deeply proud and honored to serve in the U.S. Special Forces as a Green Beret.
Bernard initially made his home in Moon Township then in Swissvale. He worked for the Commonwealth of PA at Mayview State Hospital until he retired with fond memories of playing softball with his colleagues. He was an avid motorcyclist, joining the Pittsburgh Gentlemen Motorcycle Club. He followed professional and college sports, enjoyed skiing and scuba diving, and had a passion for airplanes. He also loved just being outside, enjoying everything beautiful that grew in the yard, especially the most mature trees.
Bernard was opinionated, stubborn, and independent. He was also a protector and always had your back. Beloved father of Bethany Ann and Brian Lyne Blakey; cherished brother to Beverly Blakey Raheem, Gary Blakey and the late George Blakey, Jr.; and former spouse Bonnie (Cavitt) Plato.
Visitation Tuesday (October 12) from 4 PM until time of service at 5:30 PM at Copeland’s Moon Township, 981 Brodhead Rd. Funeral Service. Virtual guests can join for the virtial viewing at 5:15 followed by the funderal services. All are welcome.
He will return home to be buried in the family lot at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
