Brenda Denise Burgess McCoy, affectionately known to many as "BB" was born to Lawrence McKinley Burgess Sr. and Myrtle H. Burgess in New Rochelle, NY, and departed this life on December 18, 2020, and resided in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Brenda is survived by her husband Delbert McCoy, son Karif McCoy, sisters Eileen Wagstaff and Cynthia McKinney, aunt Glenave Carolina; along with a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Myrtle Burgess, father Lawrence McKinley Burgess, Sr., sister Maxine Bracey, brother Lawrence Burgess, Jr., and grandson Jeremiah McCoy.
Brenda was a New Rochelle High School graduate, where she excelled as a proficient typist and writer and developed a love for the English language. At one time, she worked in the banking industry, verifying customers’ accounts. She also enjoyed driving taxi cabs, talking to her customers, and being of service to others.
Brenda worked for the United States Postal Service, where she had recorded one of the highest scores to be recorded on the original Postal Serves examination. She was employed with the Postal Service from the late '70s until her retirement in the early '90s.
Brenda was one of the lucky few people that was actually physically present at the Kennedy Space Center launching of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969.
She loved Disney World for its attractions and its great family atmosphere. She made sure the family had a great vacation. She enjoyed spending time on Facebook with family and friends. She normally performed the role of High School class historian because of her great memory.
She loved to sing, knew all the lyrics to the songs and easily could name the groups who perform them. She loved to cook and had the patience to spend time to prepare great tasting and fantastic looking food.
Brenda had a caring heart for friends and family. If you needed someone to talk to, she was it. She had the rare capacity to be able to listen to your troubles.
She also loved to perform magic tricks for people and one of the best practical jokers you'd ever meet.

The Greatest Gift
What is the greatest gift? Its love!
But not just to be loved. It’s wonderful to receive love, but there’s a greater love. It’s the giving of love to someone, that’s the greatest gift of all.
If in life you can find someone to give your love to, you have not only given the greatest gift you have also received the greatest gift.
In travels of life, some may believe the acquisitions of things render the most fulfilling part of life. The acquisitions of things only create an unfulfilling hunger of a never-ending search for more.
Some may think satisfying ones own desire is the most rewarding gift. All it does is leave you feeling unfulfilled and lost in the emotions of emptiness and unshared journey on the road of life.
When you give love, it’s creating memories of the heart that can’t be taken, traded, lost, or borrowed, nor can they be destroyed. They will never lose value. I know this to be true because God gave his only-begotten son as a gift of love so we may have life ever after.
Dedicated to my loving wife Brenda “BB” McCoy

Prayer for Delbert Surviving Spouse
O heavenly Father, I am now in the shadow of great loneliness. My wife Brenda has been taken from me. Yet I submit in heavenly faith to Your divine will. I know that You love Brenda, who, is now in heaven rejoicing with you where there is no sickness or pain. Please grant me the strength I need to bear my present burdens and help me to look for opportunities to seek out those less fortunate than myself. Keep me from feeling sorry for myself in my present condition and keep my heart enflamed with love for You and my community so that I can help to carry on Your work of love in this world. I know one day I will be reunited with my beloved Brenda in heaven, where we both can worship You for all eternity.
Amen.

What a Wonderful Smile
I search for the words to console my loss. I can’t find them. I refuse to accept it, but I know I must. I’m still waiting for you to call me on the phone as you did every day. To say, “make sure to take care of yourself” and encourage me on for another day. While she was fighting the hard battles of so many medical obstacles. She was the bravest person I’ve had ever known.
If you ever met BB, she would capture your heart with that beautiful smile. They should add BB as a new word in the dictionary for funny and silly. Little children gather around her; she would make them laugh and smile so easily. If you wanted honesty, then talk to BB she was smart; I’m not just saying smart, I mean she was the smartest person I’ve ever met. It wasn’t just the facts smart, it was the most desirable kind of smart; people smart. She had a photographic memory; she could recall things from events or locations to such a detail that always left me shaking my head saying, how do you do that.
Need I say we didn’t have too many arguments over our 32 year marriage, I learned early in our marriage it was no contest. Because she had gained my trust and my heart, I could always speak to her and she let me know the answer to my question even when it wasn’t what I wanted to hear. I can tell you she had a wonderful gift of poetry; the girl could write, I mean if you had ever read her writing’s you would have been moved. I always asked her why don’t you publish your writings, she explained to me “Its personal. I write about people I know. It’s a gift from me to them. I write from my heart”.
To say you’re going to be missed is so true, but the love we had will never be missed because I will always love you. You were a wonderful wife, mother, sister, cousin, aunt, friend and person. I want to thank you for giving me the gift of loving you for 32 years.
Brenda, I can’t say goodbye because our love in Christ tells us this is not the end; it’s only the beginning. So, in the twinkling of an eye, we will be together again. But if you see tears in my eyes now, it’s because of the love we shared and the home you gave to Karif and me. I find myself crying and laughing when I think of you; I see you saying, “Come on Del, we had a great time together. You still have work to do. Our son needs your guidance. It’s up to you now. It's not over until Gods say it over.”
She told me it was time: she loves me, but her body had travelled as far as it could go. She said to me, “We are more than flesh and bones. I know it’s hard for you to see now but one day you will know too when it’s time to be called home”. She’s in heaven now where there is no pain, only joy and the company of all our loved ones. Although our hearts are broken, true love never dies in a twinkling of an eye, we will be together again.

What a Prankster
What a practical joker she and her friend decided to go out on the town, so both bought round trip tickets for the train. BB's friend asked her to hold her ticket. BB said,"Sure, no problem". Well, they spent all their money and it was time to catch the train to go home; it was wintertime, it was late and this was the last train. So BB's friend asked BB for her ticket and BB said, "You didn't give me your ticket". Her friend said, "Stop kidding BB. I don't have any money left to buy another ticket". Now the plot thickens; BB tells her friend "Here's what we'll do. I'll use my coat to hide you. All you have to do is crawl and hide under the seat. I'll cover you with my coat so the conductor won't see you". So her friend reluctantly agrees to do it and they board the train. BB's friend crawls under the train seat and BB covers her with her coat. After about 20 minutes the conductor comes by asking riders for their tickets. The conductor says to BB, "Miss why did you give me two tickets?". BB replied to the conductor, "My friend is kind of shy. She likes to hide under the train seats" and rips the coat away that was coving her friend. Her friend was embarrassed and so mad at BB. She said, "BB you blankie blank. You got me BB". BB could think so far ahead of you as she planned these pranks.
