Jay was born in Portland Oregon on December 7, 1959. He lived in Texas and Iowa before his family settled in Blacksburg VA. As a teenager and young adult he was a track star at both Blacksburg High School and Virginia Tech. He is still listed in the records books for running the 5000 m with a time of 14:02.8 at VA Tech and for running the 3200 m in 9:06.2 in 1978 while in High School.
Jay graduated with a BA in Marketing from Virginia Tech in 1983, a Master’s Degree in Finance from George Washington University in 1991, and a PhD in Marking from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia in 1998. Jay left a successful marketing career to pursue his dream of being a college professor like his father. He was a professor of marketing at Texas Tech and Virginia Tech before beginning his career at Seattle University in 2012. He was still a tenured faculty member at Seattle University at the time of his death.
Some of the things that Jay loved the most were American history, Ernest Hemingway (who also died at age 61), and his family. Especially his nieces and grandchildren. He was looking forward to being able to spend more time with his daughter and her family in his retirement. Jay will be remembered by his family, and the many students he taught over the past 23 years.
