Consistent with the vision of their founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.
St. Jude’s strives to be the world leader in advancing the treatment and prevention of catastrophic diseases in children, by providing outstanding patient care; conducting basic, translational and clinical research designed to elucidate biological mechanisms, understand disease pathogenesis, improve diagnosis, enhance treatment outcome, prevent diseases and minimize adverse consequences of treatment; and by educating health care and scientific research professionals. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. less

Siempre me apoyaste, me llamaste, me cuidastes. Te amo y te extraño pappas. less

It is overwhelming to think that I won’t be able to call him any time I want or that when my phone rings, it will not be him checking on me like he always did. He didn’t believe in short cuts in life. He used to say “lazy people work twice as hard”, that is something I still use today when I am feeling tired and just want to give up. Funny enough is that I find myself teaching my students lessons I learned from my dad. In my classroom, when I am trying to teach about hard work, dedication or integrity, I always start with “my dad used to say...” I guess his wisdom has been passed on to thousands of young minds. less

Immediately, that caught my attention as I thought it was the sweetest thing for her to call him like that. It reminded me of a little girl calling her dad. That’s how her calls with her dad were all the time. Super sweet as he was a sweet, caring, loving Dad! less

Thank you for your kind words and for reminding me of this wonderful memory, Nyde. I would always greet him the same way: "Pappas!" Even if we spoke 20 times that day, lol!

One of my favorite memories! My dad singing with his friends in their band called "Los Sapos del Cano". Dad had a beautiful voice and loved music. He wrote a handful of songs as well and several poems.

I remember as a little girl that he would scold me about climbing onto things in his backyard. I knew it was typical for a grandfather to be concerned over his daughter's child, but I learned to appreciate what he's tried to do for me. The last thing I remember having a good memory of was him helping me with my homework when I needed it. It sounds blunt if you think about it, but I assure you that it has meaning. That homework was about learning the life of a senior citizen, and learning everything about Carmelo when he was younger made me realize what an amazing life he's had. Thank you for everything, Abuelito. less

I admire him because of his amazing humanity, his integrity, his values, his work ethics and his dedication to family. I never heard my father gossip, nor judge anyone. I never saw him cheat, I never saw him lie (despite me occasionally suggesting it for his own benefit, lol). My dad shared some good words of wisdom over the years. He believed that dedication and hard work could overcome just about any genetic or societal disadvantage life could throw at him. I have found this to be true. “Don’t worry about what the other person is doing,” he always said. “Make the other person worry about what you are doing." Thank you for the wonderful lessons.
I Iove you dad. less
