Romie Cervantes
At the tender age of 6, Romie became Dad’s “little preacher girl,” helping to assist in the family’s ministry in rest homes, prisons and jails. She later joined her Father’s weekly Christian Radio program. After she married at the age of 18, Romie led educational conferences, and music programs, and was recognized as an impassioned and influential leader in her Church.
From this marriage, Romie began her family. In her words, “God blessed me with three beautiful daughters, Debbie, Darlene, and Benita, and three wonderful men who I love as my sons, Jorge, Armando, and Anthony,” (son in-laws). Romie raised her daughters to be independent, resilient and compassionate. The family grew to include 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and a great-godson.
In 1994, Romie assumed guardianship of her youngest brother, Larry. The two lived together until the day she died on February 7, 2022. In a recent letter, she wrote, “My wonderful brother Larry, that God hand-picked for me; my chauffeur, caregiver, my friend & companion….I’ll love you forever!”
Romie has always been a leader. She shared her talent, time and skills wherever she went.
When Romie served as Regional Director of Children’s programs for her Church she established over thirteen Missionette (youth groups) programs in the US and Mexico and over sixty Vacation Bible School programs.
In 1986, Romie became Facility Chaplain at Las Colinas Women’s Detention where she served eleven years. She also served as Facility Chaplain for Las Colinas Men’s Detention for three years, and Volunteer Chaplain at MCC downtown San Diego and CA Federal Facilities.
At the time of her death Romie was the Facility Chaplain for the Chula Vista Police Department where she had been serving since 2011.
The crowning achievement of Chaplain Romie’s leadership was the founding of the Love Bridge Prison Ministry in 1989. This program delivers hope, prayer, education, and access to resources, to incarcerated women in San Diego. In December, Love Bridge celebrated 32 years at their Annual Daughters of the King banquet. Through Love Bridge, an alliance of churches, ministries, rehabilitation homes, and community supporters have contributed time and resources to help these disenfranchised women and their families.
In her early, single-mom days, Romie was a professional Bookkeeper, working for several businesses. Later she became a successful Real Estate Agent. She loved to sing. She loved to garden. She loved ‘familia’ and adored her grand-children and great-grandchildren. And, she was always devoted to her spiritual brethren, sisters and brothers, daughters and sons.
Balancing career, family, and the ministry was always a challenge for Romie. However, her life filled with love, family, faith, and success, is proof that it was all worth it! She leaves behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.
