It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we are communicating the passing of Dave Maurer. Dave was part of the Marine and Protective Coatings business working as a Product Manager within the Global Marketing Team, moving to the Strongsville site earlier this year when Berea closed. Dave was one of the longest tenured employees dedicating 40 years of service with AkzoNobel and ICI. In those 40 years Dave had the opportunity to fulfil several different roles within marketing and business development and had such a positive impact on his colleagues and our customers. Dave had a unrivalled dedication and passion throughout his career and over the years was such a tremendous mentor for many.
In terms of a person, Dave was a loving husband and father of two daughters, Kristina and Lara. Dave and his family also recently welcomed 2 new additions to their family as he became a grandfather for the first time in 2018 and again in July 2020. The grandchildren were an absolute life changing experience and were the apple of Dave’s eye. Dave enjoyed global travel, loved cars and was quite the historian. He was an avid tennis fan and that passion was transferred to one of his daughters who played tennis collegiately. He enjoyed attending her matches. Dave and his family also had a soft spot in their hearts for cats, adopting several over the years and making sure that even the stray neighbourhood cats didn’t go hungry! This kindness is reflective of the man that Dave was, a kind hearted caring person that impacted so many over the years. He will be missed by many.

As a fellow tennis player Dave and I spoke on the subject and share stories. I enjoyed his passion as we set up products, his patient listening as I vented, and his thoroughness to his answers.

Only had one business email thread with Dave in the past but that chance meeting was enough to know he is a dedicated person and can be a teacher-friend to anyone he comes across. May the memories of his wonderful personality be celebrated by all

Like most other people, I was fortunate to have known Dave and work with him for so many years. My memories of Dave will be that he was a kind, dedicated and extremely thoughtful colleague. I still have the Borussia Dortmund football shirt he gifted to me when we first met so many years ago - he was always willing to help others and share his depth of knowledge. Dave will be a big loss for everyone who knew him and my thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues who will all miss him dearly. less

Over the years at International Paint I met Dave a number of times when I had traveled to the US and he was always most hospitable. The last time I met him he recommended a small brewery in Houston where we had a quiet evening chatting, sharing craft beers and good conversation. When Dave joined the Global Product Management Team this year it filled me with confidence to have him as a team mate, I'm just sad there will be no more conversations or shared beers.... My condolences to his family, I hope this page will show you how much he was respected by his colleagues. less

Whilst Dave reported to me, I never saw it like manager and subordinate, indeed, I saw it as an opportunity to learn from him. And so I found Dave to be extremely professional and knowledgeable about all things to do with product management. Our regular catch up calls always went on longer than planned but that was because we both found them to be extremely useful and enjoyable. Dave always had a dry sense of humour and he certainly was one of the nicest people you could care to meet. Dave was very brave and stoic about his illness, it would be tough but he would get through it. He wanted to keep in touch with e-mails during his treatment, which is just typical of him. The fact that he didn't make it is a tragedy, he will always be in my thoughts. My heartfelt condolences to his family. less

I will echo what a few others have said - there was no such thing as a quick conversation with Dave! Whenever I asked Dave a question he nearly always responded with ‘Well Claire, here’s the story…..’ and then I’d sit back with a cup of coffee and listen. He was a great teacher and mentor. He will be missed. less

Dave immediately struck me as the kind of person you wanted to work with and for. He was genuine and passionate about his " Devoe " buckets. His personal brand is the kind we should all want to emulate. My condolences to his family and friends.

I have learnt a lot through the meetings and email exchanges I had with Dave. It was just last year during my visit to Berea that I met him personally and had lunch with him. I will always cherish those moments. He was looking forward to play tennis that evening. I was amazed to see the zest he had for life. I am a better paint guy and a better person today in part because of what I learnt from Dave. It was always exciting to hear about his perspective about matters as it came from his years of rich experience. I will sorely miss Dave. My heartfelt condolences to Dave's family. Although based thousands of miles away in the UK, I got to know him quite well. Even though he was one of the most experienced members of the team, his thirst for knowledge and development never wavered in the digital field where he was keen to understand how he could work more efficiently and do better.
In every conversation I had he would talk about his family, there was always something he was feeling especially proud of - be it a new grandchild or one of his daughter’s sporting achievements. He was also very proud of his home and the area he lived in. He was just someone that was really happy with what he had around him. Dave was one of life’s good guys and my heart and best wishes go and out to Dave’s family. less
This man changed the direction of my professional career and consequently personal life forever, through one simple act of kindness...I will be eternally grateful to him.

I have worked with Dave for well over 10 years and learned so much from him both professionally and personally. He was an amazing and kind person that approached his work and other interests with a passion reserved only for the best of folk. His love for his family and friends was plainly obvious and he had no reservations in showing that love. Dave was a tremendous mentor to the younger members of our marketing team and you could tell that he truly enjoyed sharing his experience and learning to help guide people. We used to joke that any chat with Dave would turn into the "Maurer Power Hour" but I would give anything to have one more "Power Hour" with him.
To his family I would like to say that my heartbreaks for your loss and that he spoke often about you. He was so proud of his family. Thank you for sharing him with us and I will truly miss him as will so many others. less

Ever since I started working in marketing he took it uppon himself to help me in every way possible. He has spent countless hours teaching me and always had time for me whenever I had questions. I wish everyone had a mentor half as good as Dave. The two years when I had the privilege to learn from him were way too short.
I grew up watching tennis back in the Czech Republic and was blown away when he was able to name every Czech tennis player, current and past. He never forgot to ask me how my rescue dogs are doing and I would in turn check on the cats. Talking to Dave was one of the absolute highlights of my day and I still cannot believe I will never hear his voice again.
As I read this after myself I feel like no words can accurately describe just how amazing and important Dave was to me. He was someone I’d look up to, someone who would lead by example with his passion for people and work both. He was kind and dependable and every issue seemed much smaller after talking to him. I will never stop missing him. less
