Dipak (Ruby) Basu P.Eng.
It is with profound sorrow and heart breaking grief that the family of this incredible wonderful man announce his sudden passing at Peace Arch Hospital , White Rock, B.C.
Born in Mandalay, Burma (Myanmar) Dipak along with his parents, a paternal uncle, and 7 other siblings had to make a horrendous trek from their well established family home back to Bengal where all other family resided. A trip that during normal times would have taken them about 3 days took them 4 months , this was because the invasion of Burma by the Japanese during the 2nd world war had started. Two of his siblings did not survive the trek , Dipak was 4 years old at the time and was the last surviving member of that generation
Left to mourn his loss is his wife of over 55 years , Ellen, and their 4 children, daughter Monica in Australia,(Greg) Rena (Christopher) son Trevor and youngest daughter Onita Basu Phd PEng.
Grandchildren Tyler (Teresa), Dylan, Jazmin, Alex, Morgan, Riley, Max and Quinlan. Great grand children Samuel and Maria.
Dipak and Ellen ,along with their 7 month old baby Monica arrived in Canada September 16th.1966. from Glasgow Scotland. They lived and settled in Vancouver and Lower Mainland working and raising their 4 children, watching them receive their education and slowly grow into mature ,beautiful adults who subsequently presented them with the amazing gifts of the 3rd and 4th generation of The Basu Clan in Canada and Australia.
Dipak worked as a Civil Engineer the majority of his life in the Municipal Field, including The City of Surrey, Municipality of Delta and The City of Chilliwack from where he retired.
There was a period of almost a decade where Dipak and Ellen worked together, side by side, in their company D.& E. Engineering Consultants and Project Management.
Dipak also published several articles in various Engineering Publications and was known by many in the same field.
Dipak always enjoyed a very full social life not only in his younger years but also the so called mature years. He loved a good party with all his family and friends ,especially the Scottish Party of the year “Hogmanay” (New Year). It is rather ironic that this was the day he actually passed, however, Dipak also loved to hear the Frank Sinatra version of “My Way” and Dipak truly lived his life his way.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will only be at this time a private family funeral. Hopefully later this year we can all celebrate Dipak’s well lived life.
In Lieu of flowers the family respectfully suggest that donations may be made to the following; B.C. Heart and Stroke Foundation and Oxfam Canada.
