I am absolutely devastated for his family, for the many friends of Tomás Lyons, and for all of his patients. I was diagnosed several months ago with an aggressive subtype of breast cancer which left my husband and I terrified...until we met Dr. Tomás Lyons. Dr. Lyons made my way much easier these past few months. I thought of him as a compassionate friend who really truly cared about my well being. There have been many moments where I have felt deeply comforted by the thought of having this trusted doctor and kind human on my care team. My family all knew him by name, even though they had not met him in person and my mom often repeats back to me: Just like Dr. Lyons told you, you will live a long, beautiful life. I am so grateful to the parents that raised this beautiful and brilliant man and trusted doctor to so many, and to have crossed paths with him during this difficult time in my life. I will never forget Tomás Lyons and what he has give me in the way of extraordinary, compassionate, evidence based medical care, and hope his encouraging words stay with me throughout the rest of my journey. My sympathies to all who loved him and whose lives he touched. less

Tomas was a brilliant man with a charming wit and a beautiful brogue that I could listen to all day. He dedicated his life to serving others in the most inspiring of ways. First, with his many academic achievements that led him to a successful career as a medical oncologist. Tomas had it all as a doctor-- it felt like at such a young age he had already mastered both the science and the art of medicine. Every interaction was filled with compassion, patience, understanding, and knowledge. He was admired by both his patients and colleagues for these attributes.
Tomas was also a true global citizen and was passionate about this role. He firmly believed in doing one's part to make the world a better place for everyone. He worked especially hard for those patients and individuals who are most vulnerable. He inspired others to do the same.
Tomas- you've inspired me in so many ways and I know you will continue to do so. My heart breaks for your family. I am grateful to them for raising such a beautiful human being. I will never understand why you were taken from us so soon. Love you, friend. less

I've known Tomas since he came to MSKCC for his Advanced Oncology Fellowship, where I persuaded him unsuccessfully to focus on GI cancers. I was nevertheless thrilled when he was offered a position on the Breast Medicine Service.
Tomas was a wonderful person and beloved by all of us in my group and our patients. He also smelled remarkably good, to the extent that my nurse asked him for the name of his expensive cologne.
An enduring memory I have is when I ran into him in the lobby of our office building just as he was planning to catch a cab to JFK to fly back to Ireland just to vote for the referendum on abortion. He was thrilled and excited, genuinely happy to be able to participate in a selfless act that would bring more rights and freedoms to others.
I am honored to have known him. I extend my sincerest condolences to his family and friends here and in Ireland. I share the sorrow all of us here at MSKCC have at this inexplicable loss. I hope that, wherever he is, he finds everlasting peace and eternal rest. less

Over the past few years, I have come to share many patients with Tomas, and in doing so, have learned what a compassionate, kind, skilled, knowledgeable and simply wonderful doctor he is. I very much enjoyed sharing patients with him -- discussing difficult cases and striving together to provide the best care possible. Patients universally loved him. Even the most frightened or skeptical patient came to trust and love Dr. Lyons with time. He provided superb care to them. I’m certain that his patients are mourning his loss just as we all are. less

I too am the mother of grown children and can't fathom the indescribable pain this has brought to his parents.
