Ellen Williamson was one of those people. She was a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, artist and so much more. Her smile lit up every room and she touched everyone she met. Her art reflected the beauty she found all around her, and made the world a more beautiful place for everyone who saw it.
She will be missed, but will live on in her art, our memories and our hearts.
Six months has gone by so fast, without you by my side, there hasn’t been a moment I didn’t think of you, or a day I haven’t cried. Time keeps moving on, there’s nothing I can do, but remember every moment, I was able to share with you. We miss you Ellen❤️

Today I spend the whole day remembering our times together, our times apart but when I was constantly reminded of her by all that is beautiful in nature and life.
She was beyond special. It's like she was hardwired for goodness. No matter the injustice she would voice her disdain and then quickly turn to the light in everything. She loved Titos and soda, funky stylish clothes...oh, and, never forget the shoes, food of all sorts, humanity with all its gnarly warts. Like no other, she could flip something negative into possibility. She laughed. She loved. We all lost when she passed this week.
I remember when she generously went shopping with me. I hate shopping, but with her it was doable, fun, an adventure. She was always to the rescue, bringing her uniquities along with her.
She painted many pet portraits for me, a couple were my motley animal crew, a couple for dear friends. She captured their essence, their expressions. Even today, it is as if a living creature looks back at me in those paintings. Those renaissance painters had nothing on her.
She taught me how to love unconditionally. Through her actions, she taught me what grace truly was. She was a champion for others, young and old. She taught me how to radically change your life when her body was under siege -- ditching sugar, booze and embracing all that is natural and healthy in the world. She demonstrated the bravest actions day in and out throughout her second battle, recording live on facebook her trials and triumphs. She shared her grand adventures no matter the magnificence -- a trip to far off lands equaled the wonder of the songbirds in her backyard.
I was angry when I got the news. I went to my usual script - in a world that is full of hate and evil, why on earth can this beacon of optimism and hope be snuffed out so early...so young. Then I decided to just honor her...honor her gentle and kind voice and presence that drowned out the sadness of the world.
I genuinely believe that what she said was what she meant. It wasn't some sort of self-help mantra she read in a book and repeated out loud to convince herself. It was literally in her DNA, her soul.
Her smile lit up a thousand rooms of darkness, many of which were within me. She gave life a crushing bear hug and when it bit back the first time she had breast cancer she fought it off with Amazonian might. Ironically that was a huge gift for her. A come back with a powerful gentleness to teach us all gratitude and grace. Courage to quit an oppressive job and career. Fearlessness to fuel her rise to a queen of kindness, creativity, and brilliance.
She is an inspiration for happiness. Her legacy is one many of us only dream of, one where every human she encountered was uplifted to their next height by just being around her.
I can't thank her enough for all she did in our brief friendship. Some tangible, like dropping the grammar hammer on my first book when I asked her to pre-read and edit. She shared her merry band of friends with me who all unknowingly to them gave me the courage to take risks and live without the parallelizing fear of the odds stacked up. Some intangible like how kindness and empathy are our best weapons against the struggle in this world.
She was a lightning rod of joy. It's like her energy transcended time and space. She was truly a unicorn. I'm blessed to have encountered such a magical creature. Rest in peace, my friend. Your legacy of hope, kindness, and beauty reverberates eternally. less

There is mini-glen with a stream and a ginormous fallen tree on the ridge above. Down in the bottom by the water there have been little blooming things for weeks, including some white lilies that I've started calling Ellen Lillies since I first saw them last weekend when we knew that she was slipping away.
The tree fell in the late summer of 2018 and I've since been fascinated by it. The intertwined roots and rocks under this massive tree seem like analogies for so much. I can't help but think that Ellen would have seen it, too, and expressed it eloquently - and with pure joy.
Recently, I've noticed that new growth in the soil of the root ball has turned and is growing up toward the sun. It made me think of how Ellen lived with cancer and worked to heal her body. The tree fell, but the living things adapted, turned, and reached for the sun.
I thought a lot today about the last 2+ years with Ellen. I'll never fully understand how she was able to live with so much positivity and joy but I'll live the rest of my life being inspired by that and the lessons she shared along the way.
Good bye for now, dear Ellen. I will continue to see you in the little blooming things, the way nature gets our attention and says hello (like my little baby fox visitors this morning!), and maybe my favorite -- when my bare feet are caked with dirt after a day of playing in the outdoors. I'll be seeing you around.
My love is with your family and your sweet Bella. less

I had the honor of coaching Ellen through the last six months of her life—so much of our time together she expressed her joy, gratitude, love for all those in her circle, and a great appreciation for the beauty of life.
She always walked in to each session with a smile, excited to learn more ways to live in the fullest expression of herself every moment of life—which she did. She loved her new art studio, which her dad helped her build, and was so grateful for all the friends who supported her, and especially her parents’ presence throughout all her health challenges. She also loved teaching art, and brought her programs (and joy I am sure) to kids.
Not once did she complain...she saw the gift in every day, and seized every moment. I am so very blessed that our paths crossed. Today, “celebrating her life” lakeside, so many beautiful signs of her presence came through—the heart-shaped cloud, which I took upside down to capture it, the two ducks that decided to float by as I was placing the flowers and a heart painting on the ground and the brisk breeze which felt like it was clearing away the hurt of loss to feel her joy.
Forever blessed by this woman with a HUGE HEART.
With deepest sympathy to her family... and gratitude for your bringing this angel of light into the world. She will shine upon us always.
Remembering Ellen on this beautiful day. She was such an inspiration to so many and her spirit is truly palpable among us. Sending love and prayers to the entire Williamson family. You are not alone.

Her smile, zest for life, positivity and fearlessness gave us all hope. She was an amazing force of energy! While living in Raleigh, we grew our friendship and bonded a lot over music. She loved her Pearl Jam/Foo Fighters and I was a Widespread fan but we found common ground in between and enjoyed seeing so much music together. Brandi Carlile was a favorite which we got to see several times, Emmylou, Allison Krauss, Lucinda, Patty Griffin, John Hiatt (I remember sitting out in the rain and her being like, why are we here but she stayed) Keller, JJ Grey, Robert Randolph, Black Crows, Old Crow, Tedeschi Trucks, MMJ, Mumford, lots of bluegrass and spent several years at FloydFest together and the list goes on. We loved our music! Our time spent in nature on our many walks with our beloved pups, Bella & Gus will always be remembered and put a smile on my face. She made me look at things from a different perspective, she showed me how important it is to LIVE, be present, to find the JOY in the small things and reminded us all that things will be OK. I I feel so blessed to have had a friendship with such an amazing person who I have learned so much from and will live in my heart forever. Peace be with you my friend and love to your family. less

I will not say goodbye- Ellen but rest easy until we meet again! I imagine you still inspiring us all through the video clips you left us. I see you dancing, smiling, painting the heavens and protecting everyone you love from above. Thank you for all the love and inspiration you shared; you brightened my days more then you can ever imagine and you have reminded me to always breathe in, breathe out, slow down and focus on how beautiful life is and how much we should appreciate every single moment. less
