In lieu of flowers, the Shen family kindly requests that memorial gifts be made in Han C. Shen’s name to “ILD Clinical and Translational Research Fund 227400” at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) to support the ongoing work of Dr. Robert Hallowell and his colleagues. Dr. Hallowell and team had treated Hancong’s pulmonary fibrosis/hypertension for the past five years. Unfortunately, this disease does not yet have a cure or many treatment options. Your gift can help to extend Dr. Hallowell and MGH efforts in this area.

I always enjoyed our Telemedicine Zoom calls and office visits as he was the sweetest man who always had a smile on his face. I admired how involved Tao and Wei were with his care and enjoyed getting to know them too during our visits. Mr. Shen has left a lasting impression on me as a Nurse Practitioner and I will always remember his infectious laugh. I am sending my sincerest condolences to his family and friends. less

I was the first non-Chinese to join the family and he and his wife Shu Ying and brother Tao, were all so welcoming to me. The best part was Hancong and Shu Ying would often take my side when Wei and I would get into arguments as they know how strong-willed she could be. Or maybe they just felt bad for me because I never seemed to win any. Either way, I feel blessed to be a part of this family and Ye Ye was the head of i.
Ye Ye was the most unselfish person I have ever met. He always put family first, worked hard, could fix just about anything, was a fantastic cook (it's up for grabs who wins the prize between him and his wife as top chef), and was just always so positive. He had patience and perseverance that served him well his entire life. I enjoyed hearing his stories of when he was young and he was one of the few people in his community that could swim so when a major flood came he was sent out to check on all the damaged roads and bridges. He would tell the story about how we would be holding his shoes above his head and swim across the water keeping his shoes dry and how he was out for days to complete the work. He was a great swimmer, just a couple of years back he would swim at our lake and stand-up paddleboard at age 87 - incredible!
Life was not always easy for YeYe and he sacrificed a lot for his family. He suffered through the Chinese Cultural Revolution, being separated from his family, beaten, and although they tried to coerce him to make false confessions and false accusations against others, he never did, he stood strong in the case of some of the most challenging circumstances you can imagine.
He went on to build quite a career for himself in agriculture mechanization and had a comfortable life in China. However, he wanted more for his family, he wanted his children to have the opportunity to have an even better life so he gave up his career in China and brought his family to the US. Once in the US, he took whatever jobs he could get to put food on the table and a roof over his family's head. He did everything from work as a houseman collecting laundry at a hotel to fixing lawnmowers and vacuum cleaners (there really wasn't anything he could not figure out how to fix). After he landed a role at a Biopharma company working in the warehouse, the company CEO quickly realized his intelligence and skill and put him working in the lab. From there he and his wife continued to work to help their son and daughter-in-law start their new life in China and build a successful dental practice.
I wish I would have told him how much I respected him, how much his sacrifice impacted others, and how his strength and dedication to family made me want to be a better father and husband. I see his legacy living on in his daughter and son, who are both equally dedicated to their famililes. Hancong has left quite a legacy and I am thankful for the time I had with him, for the daughter he raised, and that I am able to be a part of his family.

We enjoyed seeing him during his trips to Milwaukee to visit Wei, Mark, Camryn, and Anna. He was an adoring grandfather, father and caring husband. We especially enjoyed seeing the times he spent with my parents, George and Sumi. They really loved spending time together, lots of endless conversations with, of course, great food. What always will remain with us is Mr. Shen's bright, persistent smile and spirit. Such a special human being.
Much love,

He never arrived without laughing and smiling, regardless of how he was feeling that day. He would always insist on checking up on my health and the well-being of my family, and was genuinely concerned about all of the office staff. It goes without saying that everyone loved seeing him! It was a true honor meeting members of the Shen family through this remarkable man. I wish all who knew him peace and healing during this difficult time. less
