Many years later we worked on the due diligence team for the Dunlop plants at Riessa and Furstenwalde . I also remember going out with Hans , his wife , and Denny Warren in Bangkok when Hans was production director there . I always enjoyed working with Hans and am sorry to hear of his passing . less

I also often found myself praying about the new family, their “in-laws”. Bruinhilde and Hans were part of answered prayers in the most blessed way. They love our daughter as their own, and they love our shared grandchildren. They became like a brother and sister to us, and we love them. While Bruinhilde created the space, atmosphere and meals as the foundation for family fun, Hans was the director/maestro of all other shenanigans. Hans was the best coconspirator in loving and spoiling our grandchildren. When he took his car to fill it up with gasoline, he would ‘discover’ that the gas station just happened to have doughnuts. His car’s door pockets often hid candy and special treats. He would encourage learning by turning a lesson into a race. He was a nurturer, and he loved to help plan trips and fun times. He wanted to be certain nothing was missed.
Joye and Christian often include me on their family trips just as Hans and Bruinhilde included her mother, TicToc Oma. One summer Joye, the children, and I were driving a meandering trip from Franklin via Martin to various places in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. We were to meet Christian in Denver where I would fly home and they would continue on to more travel adventures. Although Hans was concerned about two women traveling alone with two children, he got on board with the idea and made a booklet of places to go and places to see. He monitored our travel via an app connected to Gizmos that the children wore. Joye and I are not good at sticking to a plan. If we saw a sign about a site that was not on our list, but looked interesting, we would include it in our day’s activities as a side trip. The first few times we did this, Hans called and said, “I see you have deviated from your schedule. Is everything alright?” As that trip progressed, he would call and essentially ask, “What have you gotten into now?”
After I retired, I took a semester of German just make sure my brain would not atrophy. I hosted the class’s Oktober Fest party, and with the advice of Hans, Bruinhilde, Christian, & Joye made it as authentic as possible. As a student of German, I travelled to Germany on a ten-day trip with my class. We stayed in Wernigerode, and took day trips to historic sites or sites of natural beauty. Most of Germany is beautiful. Before the trip began, Hans had me download an app that would help him know where I was so that he could suggest places that might also be of interest me, and he could make sure we were not going to places that might have safety risks. I teased him and told him that our professors had everything planned. We would be safe. He countered back asking me if I had watched the movie “Taken”. I laughed and told him if I got taken, they would bring me back and pay someone to take me. He laughed and said that was right. Hans wanted everyone safe and he wanted to make sure we were having the best time possible.
Hans had a great gusto for life. He lived it to the fullest, and he encouraged everyone else to do the same. He was a treasured friend/brother/grandparent --- a beloved Opa. He was loved.
