Iris Schwarz Baiocchi, 78, passed away peacefully at home on November 5, 2021. Iris was born on January 13, 1943 to Arthur and Gretchen Schwarz (Theinert), in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Iris was preceded in death by her parents. Iris is survived by her husband and partner of 57 years, Orlando, and her sons Gianpaolo, Mauricio, Arturo and Francisco, as well as her daughters-in-law Paula, Sarah and Emma, and her beloved grandchildren Aisha, Joaquim, Safina, Pedro and Federico. Iris was a lifelong science educator. She taught at the Brazilian Universities of Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, as well California State University Chico, University of Missouri Rolla and a number of community colleges. She had a passion for laboratory and teaching. She was a philanthropist, volunteer, and ally to many vital causes, and served as treasurer of the Tacoma Area Literacy Council. More than anything, Iris loved spending time with her family. Iris's family has established a scholarship in honor of her memory for women entering the fields of physics, engineering, visual graphics, sociology, social work or journalism.
