Irmengard (Irma) Gilbert, born March 27, 1940 in Wasserburg am Inn, Bavaria, Germany passed away peacefully at home, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones on January 23, 2021. Irma was preceded in death after 58 years of marriage by her loving husband Kenneth Roland Gilbert. Her parents Josef and Elizabeth Pichlmaier, brothers Ernst and Josef Pichlmaier, and sister Franziska Hoheisel will welcome her to heaven, as well.
Irma grew up in the beautiful, small town and farming community of Wasserburg am Inn. She began her life in America in 1958 after marrying Kenneth Gilbert, a U.S. Army soldier. Irma’s love for her family was evidenced by a home filled with pictures of them on every wall and a room filled with toys for her grand and great grandchildren. She left a legacy of love, German cooking and stories of her life growing up in post war Germany. Irma talked often about growing up in Germany, picking wildflowers and blueberries and foraging for mushrooms. She worked as a house daughter for a baron and baroness and lived in their castle. She had a fond memory of working in a family restaurant and learning to cook. Her loved ones will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
She is survived by her sister Brigitta Weuve; daughters: Juanita Sanders (Larry), Galinda Wright (Richard), Diane McAdoo (Jon); grandchildren: Jason, Mathew, Melissa, Kenny, Brandon, Steven and Kristen; 10 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She will rest next to her husband at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, California. A private service will be attended on February 25th by the family with a private celebration of life reception at her home on February 27th. Irma loved animals, especially her cat Baby and the birds in her backyard. We ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent toFront Street Animal Shelter or the American Cancer Society.
