I have been hiring equipment from VMI for well over 15 years and during that time Jay delivered the majority off it. He would always be pleasant, stopping for a chat while he lugged the equipment through our offices, he really seemed to enjoy his job, He always went well out of his way for VMI’s clients. I remember on numerous occasion Jay would tell me to call him personally if I ever had any issues with equipment and I often did…
He wasn’t delivering over the last couple of years and his face has been missed at MerchantCantos – I would always look forward to catching up with him when I ventured over to VMI to test equipment. I’m REALLY going to miss those chats!
RIP

I’ll be missing my good friend Jay Patel and we used to listen to all the 80s music all the time and had some excellent times with my colleague I considered a brother from an Indian mother. We had so much in common both grew up in Africa and Jay and his family was kicked out of Uganda by Idi Amin when he was a wee lad and he grew up in Kenya before relocating to the UK. The first thing he ever said to me was “ You know I have a uncle in Durban” and that was it friendship liftoff. We spend a lot of time together in the last 12 years and I will miss his guided tours when he took me on crew jobs all over London even though he told me the same story over and over. I will miss laughing at his jokes and ability to entertain and apparently I’m allergic to nuts but that remains to be seen. Due to this damned COVID and the fact that Jay is from an immense and loving family there will not be room for us at his funeral so I would just like to post this tribute of him. There is definitely a whole in my heart tonight ! That time........... less

He always stopped to check how I was getting on and how I was progressing. When I moved on to my next company, I was completely unaware that my new employers also used VMI so I was over the moon to see him there on my first day of that job too! Still smiling, still as reassuring as ever. He was a genuine diamond, and I am so so sad to hear of his passing.
He was the kindest soul, who would always take the time and care to check how others were. He will be greatly, greatly missed by us all.
So sad to hear about Jay’s passing :( I’ve known him over the years at VMI, he was a really nice man. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Praying for strength for his family to bear the loss.

I had the pleasure of working with Jay for a couple of years. From the day I met him he was welcoming, kind, friendly, happy and generous. This was him every day! Never without a smile. He was full of life and helped us out whenever he could. A hardworker and a lovely human being. Thanks for the memories Jay. Rest in peace, Ria x. less

I always looked forward to when Jay would deliver my kit hire, he always went the extra mile and had a beaming smile on his face. I remember him delivering direct to my flat in Clapham years ago and asking how my freelancing was going, taking an interest in my personal film projects and even being a true salesman by telling me to tell VMI if I had a film I wanted to make to see how they could help out!
He was a total ambassador for VMI and I’m sure he will be sorely missed. less

His warmth and kindness shone through so brightly he always seemed to leave a positive impression on every person he met. No company could ask for a better ambassador than Jay, whose selflessness extended to all those around him inside and outside the workplace. He would be delivering camera kit for some of his favourite customers at Lincoln’s Inn Fields during the day, then be back at the same spot after a long day in the evening with members from his Temple helping dish food for the homeless.
Jay brought a welcome energy and joy to the ups and downs of everyday life. His enthusiasm for work and living was infectious; I loved his dramatic phonecalls at 8am starting with ‘It’s Jay up here’ that would be full of energy and humour to brighten up your day.
Jay's attitude to dealing with illness would be almost unbelievably positive to a stranger, but unsurprising to those who knew him, such was his character. I will miss his humour, gossiping, generosity, and love of life. Jay may no longer be with us in person but his kindheartedness will live on in all of us who had the privilege of knowing him. less

He took me under his wing and supported me during my time in the company, making me feel welcomed and important. He was always there with a smile on his face and ready to cheer you up.
I will always remember the time when I was hired after my internship when he said “You now earn real money! British money!” RIP Jay, you were a caring and full of life person and you will always be remembered. less

We had a deal in the summer that he would buy me pakistani mangos from the shops in Harrow and bring them in for me on Tuesdays when I would visit work and I would bring him 2 kg of fresh Kent cherries! He loved Kent cherries and even 2kg was never enough for him!
