We created a GatheringUs memorial to celebrate the life of Kenneth Lee Van Emmerik. Collecting your stories and memories here will offer us great comfort. As we plan virtual and in person gatherings, we will share details here. Thank you for contributing to this lasting memorial.
Kenneth Lee Van Emmerik, Ken, Kenny, Cocoa, “Hey You”, 76 years, passed away peacefully in his sleep in his home in Chandler, Arizona, surrounded by his loving family, on July 6, 2020. Ken grew up in the Salem area in South Dakota. He joined the Navy in November 1966 and excelled at everything he did in the service till he was discharged in November 1968. Shortly after his military service, he got married and started a family in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1980 he decided to head south with his family to Arizona, where he stayed. He thrived in Arizona, as a successful businessman, a supportive father, and eventually a doting grandpa. He loved to travel, work with leather, work with wood, go camping, fishing, and shooting, but his favorite times were spent playing cards and sharing a meal with family. He will forever be remembered for his yodeling. He would try to teach anyone, anytime, anywhere.
Ken is survived by 6 of his children, Tyrina (Tom), Cynara, Amanda (Robert), Trudy (Colen), Rebekah (Robert), and Kylan (Sharon). His true joy was his 19 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Gladys Van Emmerik, his oldest son, Kenneth Lee Van Emmerik II (Chip), and a grandson, Toby Duffy.
Ken was adamant that he wanted to be cremated and have no funeral service. He did not want people to be sad when they remembered him. Instead he wanted a Celebration of Life, where friends and family can gather telling stories, laughing, and remembering the good times. This event will take place at a later time yet to be determined. Don’t worry, “Whiskey Man” and “Spot” have been notified.
The family is asking that any cards be sent to 1909 E. Ray Rd. Suite 9-235 Chandler, Arizona 85225
