Kevin Sean Phillips, 61, of Upper Marlboro, MD died suddenly at his workplace on August 10, 2020.
He was born on February 15, 1959 in Fairbanks, Alaska to the late Donald Phillips and Margaret Vrhovac Phillips. He lived in Dundalk, MD during the years of elementary school and later moved with his family to Bowie, MD which was the place he considered home. He graduated from Bowie High School and then attended the University of Maryland in College Park, MD where he earned a BA degree in Speech Communication.
Kevin married Regina Casey Phillips in Upper Marlboro, MD on September 12, 1990 and they lived in Croom, MD. Kevin had one son, Sean Patrick Phillips, who was the light of his life. He was a great father who was always involved with Sean’s activities and school.
Most recently Kevin was employed as a Maintenance Mechanic at the College of Southern Maryland, where he could fix almost anything. He had a special interest in the restoration of historic houses and buildings. Through the years Kevin developed a great deal of expertise and many specialized skills to help restore these properties. He liked to use original windows, siding, hardware, flooring, antiques, and anything else he could salvage from the property to restore a building or home to the way it looked when it was first built.
He liked to fish, hike, and backpack. He enjoyed both the beach and the mountains and especially loved Topsail Island beach in North Carolina and the Appalachian Trail. He enjoyed skiing and never minded the cold weather. The years that Kevin spent as a Boy Scout Leader were an important part of his life and the positive impact that he had on many young people, as well as the other leaders, is immeasurable.
Kevin loved to blast loud music when he was working around his old house. He loved the music that he grew up with including Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones, Evanescence, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Sheryl Crow – the list goes on. He loved Christmas, and Hallmark movies, Star Wars and super hero movies. He was interested in ancient history, American history, and biblical history. He loved to explore old houses and historic properties where he absorbed their stories and appreciated the craftsmanship.
He was kind, funny, and always willing to help anybody with anything. Kevin was the one you called when you needed something, always steady and dependable. A jack of all trades. He enjoyed a good joke and telling stories to make people laugh. You were lucky if he gave you one of the crazy nicknames that he liked to assign to people that he knew. He was close to his family and many friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He remained lifelong friends with a long list of the “kids” he grew up with in Bowie and those friendships, and the others he made along the way, meant the world to him.
He is survived by his wife, Regina Casey Phillips and his son Sean Patrick Phillips of Upper Marlboro (Croom), MD; his siblings: Donny Phillips of Bowie, MD, and Randy Phillips (Hannelore) of Estes Park, Colorado, and his mother Margie Phillips of Bowie, MD. He is preceded in death by his father Donald A. Phillips.
