The world of trails and outdoor adventures lost a great friend when Larry Snead passed away on July 19, 2019, at 85 years of age. Under his decades of leadership, many segments of the 800-mile Arizona National Scenic Trail and the 315-mile Maricopa Trail were built and continue to be maintained by segment stewards, land managers and hundreds of volunteers who faithfully carry on Larry’s love for these trails.
Larry led a diverse life of adventure that included hiking, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, and traveling to more than 100 countries and islands, but none meant more to Larry than the wild beauty and reverent tribute to nature that he felt when he was outdoors on Arizona’s trails.
The story of Larry’s life achievements and adventures will be shared at a special Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Boy Scouts of America’s Grand Canyon Council Service Center (2969 North Greenfield Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016). If you plan to attend the Celebration of Life open house event, please send an email to hancockjan@aol.com and enter RSVP in the subject line so we can plan.
Friends and partners with Arizona’s trails and all of those who worked with Larry are encouraged to attend this Celebration of Life in casual or outdoor recreational attire and enjoy their time talking with friends. Memorial guests can browse the table and easel displays highlighting some of Larry’s collection of memorabilia from his adventure-filled life and travels, including his books, maps, and photos from his trips to all seven continents.
Before he left us, Larry asked that contributions in his memory be made to help continue his passion for protecting natural landscapes and recreational trails for future generations by supporting the organizations he cared so much about: the Arizona Trail Association; the Maricopa Trail and Park Foundation; and the Grand Canyon Council, Boy Scouts of America.
