Lloyd W. Singer, aged 92, passed away on Wednesday Jan 4, 2023 in Highland Park, Illinois, surrounded by his daughters and wife.
Lloyd, “Lloydo”, “Dad, “Dada”, “Poppy” as he was lovingly referred to by his family, was a constant cheerleader for his “girls” and his grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to tell them and others how proud he was of them. He gave freely of his advice and support, and they are all stronger, more confident people because of it.
Lloyd was a doer. When he started something new – whether it was founding a company or building a vegetable garden -- he did it with passion, determination, and laser focus. What made him such a strong leader is that this enthusiasm was infectious – when he got going on a project, he made everyone around him want to join in.
Lloyd was born on Sept. 15, 1930, in Yonkers New York to Abraham and Blanche Singer. Lloyd attended Scarborough High in Scarsdale and graduated from Columbia University in New York in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science from the Columbia School of Engineering. He was a member of the Tau Epsilon Phi Fraternity.
In 1954, Lloyd married Harriet Adler and entered the Navy. As an officer of the Naval Air Force stationed on Guam, Lloyd led a division of 100 men. A highlight of his time on Guam was flying small planes (WV2s) into the eye of typhoons to provide weather reconnaissance to the Seventh Fleet. This fearless and adventurous spirit was manifest in all his endeavors over the next 70 years. While on Guam, two of Lloyd’s daughters were born, Karen (1956) and Jill (1958).
When he returned from Guam, Lloyd began working at Motorola, where his talent for innovation was put to use in developing the Electronic Video Recording system, a precursor of the soon-to-be ubiquitous Video Cassette Recorder (VCR). In 1963, he was transferred to the Chicago area where he spent the rest of his life.
A lifelong entrepreneur, Lloyd founded, grew, and later sold Motorola Teleprograms, Inc., a successful video training company for the law enforcement, healthcare and social service markets. Lloyd went on to found and lead Learning Communications, distributing and producing DVD training, e-learning and workshops on a global basis. As a consummate “deal-maker,” he spent many years as a consultant, brokering mergers and acquisitions in the training industry. Lloyd took on many other ventures, from house renovations to investing in emerging businesses.
Lloyd married Joan Scarpelli on August 24th, 1984, and their daughter Jenna Marie was born on April 5th, 1990.
Lloyd loved to work, and he also loved sports. He played football in high school, and later became an avid Chicago Bears fan, watching every game he could. He was a skilled and enthusiastic tennis player, and taught his three daughters, two wives, and five grand-children how to play and love the game. Lloyd was also a fitness enthusiast, a runner before it was popular. Other hobbies included collecting art, gardening, and piano.
In addition to his loving wife of 39 years, Joan, he is survived by his daughters Karen Singer (Paul Selden), Jill Singer (Harry West), Jenna Singer, and his grandchildren, Daniel and Kate Selden, Michael, Eli, and Luke West, and his great granddaughter Emilia Rutledge Selden.
A celebration of Lloyd’s life will be held in the near future, details coming soon.
