We are heartbroken to announce that are beloved sister Lorna passed away on Jan. 1st.
Left behind to grieve are brothers Colin (Linda), Norman, Bill (Susan); many nieces and nephews; foster daughter Chantal, granddaughter Lily; and cherished friends around the world.
From the moment Lorna was brought home to Glen Park by Stan and Jean in 1958, she was our adored sister. She was raised beside the park, and in Kelowna. Shortly after high school, Lorna was selected for Canada World Youth, and thus began a life of adventure.
Before she was 20 years old Lorna had experienced village life deep in the heart of Kalimantan, travelled the overland route from Athens to Tehran, danced with Syrian border guards, lived with a Palestinian family in Amman, served as a deck hand on the yacht Nirvanna in the Gulf of Aqaba, and worked on a kibbutz in Israel.
She found her professional calling early as a youth worker in Tofino, and in the years she spent on the West Coast, her zest for life inspired many students. She also was the first kayak guide for Tofino Ocean, served on the Tofino council, drove the ‘Iraqi’ taxis between Ucluelet and Tofino, and contributed to many environmental campaigns. After ten years on the ‘wet’ coast, she decided it was time to head south to the great land down under.
Lorna completed her education at Murdoch University in Perth, earning a Masters in Counselling. She worked at the Catholic Girls School in Bunbury for 8 years, before heading to the heart of the continent and establishing a home and a life in Alice Springs. Thus began an incredibly challenging and rewarding phase of her life. Using the medium of sport, especially baseball, she once again coached, mentored, and inspired aboriginal youth to achieve their goals. Lorna was happiest in shorts, top and flip-flops, soaking in the desert air. She loved the land so much so that she eventually became a citizen.
After almost 20 years in Australia, Lorna decided it was time to come back home to Canada. Lorna had just begun a new chapter of her life in the Victoria area, when she was diagnosed with Stage Four endometrial cancer. She was given two years to live, and loved ones are so grateful that once again we experienced the gift of her beautiful spirit. We will never forget her rendition of The Road Less Travelled recited around the campfire at the Joe Rich cabin.
We especially thank the medical specialists and teams in Victoria, Vancouver, Surrey and White Rock for their superb assistance in helping our sister navigate her cancer journey.

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free
Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free
Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worries
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free

Thank you very much for sharing the moving memouries of Lorna including some of the very funny parts. I last saw her when 3 others and myself had supper outside with her in October at the Joe Rich Cabin. I hadn't seen her for a long time and it was so good to see her once more after so many years. less

We met at Strathcona Park Lodge in the 80s, where we worked as outdoor leaders. Over several years we shared paddling, backpacking & back-country ski trips - Garibaldi Park, Stein River Valley, Cape Scott, the Rockies, Haida Gwaii, Chilkoot Trail & Yukon River were some highlights. Lorna was a competent outdoor person & inspiring naturalist. "Climb the mountains & get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, & the storms their energy. While cares will drop off like autumn leaves" - John Muir less

I think it was a Kelowna Tools for Peace, Seeds for El Salvador or a demonstration. Or maybe it was Lorna's mother, Jean who was active in the NDP who lived nearby, Francis St, who connected us with Lorna. Anyway Lorna invited us (Peter Kerr, Peter Chataway, Karen Abramsen & me) up to the cabin in Oct. 2020 for a festive COVID safe evening. I will never forget this evening...outdoors, laughs, good food and wine and thinking that Lorna was amazing (full of cancer yet +ve spirit). She told us about going to Colin's heritage house in Sicamous, then buying food for the celeratory dinner and all her plans for the next day (visiting Norm in KGH) etc. Energy +++. Such a wonderful person, Lorna was....peace Pat

Many the lively and stimulating evenings as we gathered the single friends we had here in Bunbury for a home cooked meal and stimulating company on a weekly basis. All would become firm friends with her over the few years Lorna was here and were shocked and sad when we heard the news of her cancer back there in Canada.
We also visited her in Alice Springs a couple of times on our meanderings around Oz. Always welcoming and warm (no surprise there).
The pics: with me (Kim) in our house, Bunbury; breakfast on her patio, Alice Springs; a view to the hills at her place, Alice, a massive contrast to your beautiful mountain log cabin there in Canada.
Vale Lorna, with love from Kim and Dianne (Martin) less

It was great to see so many (over 100) in attendance for tonight's (or this morning's) 'celebration of life'. I had to join the 'reunion' about 45 minutes late but, nevertheless, I hope to go browse back through later later to hear everyone's stories and reflections, especially from the first part which I may have missed, in every detail. I enjoyed the brief written synopsis too which I believe was delivered by my Uncle Bill (William), ex ante on the side, proclaiming and declaiming the outlines of the influential, if a bit-too-short lived, life of my Aunt(ie). I fully concur with testimonies heard today, about how Lorna touched people, reached out to them, in uncanny and unique and in sometimes difficult to define but...: undeniably distinctive and enduring ways. For me, as her nephew, inevitably and inescapably, I think of how she she encouraged and influenced me, her outspokenness, and- something that was remarked upon tonight too- her boldness-cum-fearlessness. She welcomed you, literally with open arms, disarmingly ! She was truly a free spirit and, in one parlance, very much more of a giver (rather than a taker or a matcher)-hence her impact on our lives ! She made you feel comfortable a lot by adapting herself. She 'set the agenda'-perhaps a tiny bit stubborn on occasions (being a human being) but, really, for me, in the final analysis, Lorna was a bold and a true leader, of whom we are to some extent 'the followers.' Thanks for all of your timely words which, tonight, captured well some essential Lorna. Now she is gone and missed- but I fully agree that this world, in any age, especially in our own, could use a great deal more Lorna-ness, and Lorna-ism ! But could any individual really be quite like this ?! Thanks for your great photographic and oral and musical contributions and for your organizing and organization ...I have got a few stories of Lorna, of my own, but these will have to wait for another occasion for publication- and I truly hope I never forget them !...David Walsh, Feb 5 2021. less
To Bill and all of Lorna's family and friends, the celebration of Lorna's life was very moving and a lovely tribute to her. Thank you for sharing so many beautiful thoughts and memories, my sincere condolences to all of you, Brenda Wemp

Her social conscience was expressed in many ways.
The Adventures, well, that's another story! Game, Lorna was game for pretty much anything or everything! And laugh, did we laugh, that fit with her mischievous nature.
At the Walsh cabin this late Fall Lorna and I sat in the quiet stillness of those moments and our words could be tasted and reflected upon.
Love, untangled is free to move in it's own spirit and form. The fullness just is.

The last time we saw Lorna was in August at the Joe Rich. We got together for an outdoor breakfast and visit. After breakfast we drank coffee and talked about so many things. We talked about her treatments and how they were going, we talked about Norm and how he was doing, about Colin and his adventures and Bill and the recent visits he had with her. And she asked about Jodi and Chris and their families and how the pandemic was affecting the school life of our three grandsons. It always struck me how Lorna would be so interested in Dave, Charlie and Quinn, she always remembered their names (even though she had only met them once that I can recall) and would ask with sincere interest about school, hockey and other activities in which they are involved.
During our visit we talked about books that we were reading and books that currently were making an impact on how we were seeing the world and our individual and collective journeys. I told her about a book that I had recently read called “The Alchemist”. It struck me then and even more so now that Lorna, like the main character in the novel, had spent her life in pursuit of her “Personal Legend”. We agreed that the next time we got together I would bring her the book. Unfortunately that meeting did not happen, but in my mind Lorna pursued her goals and dreams and even though cancer shortened her life, she put a lot of life into the time she had with us.
We were all blessed to have known, loved and been loved by Lorna. The world is a better place because Lorna made such a huge and positive impact on so many people in so many places. less
