I love this picture of Martha. I'm not sure if she's about to burst out laughing because she thinks that what I just said is ridiculous or if she's about to make a witty observation, but either way her sense of humor would have prevailed.

Barbara was returning to the city of her earliest childhood and finding herself a little lost. Martha invited us into the Covenant community and made it her business to see that we learned our ways around. This, of course, included food, drink and new people. Her mission never stopped; we were and remain grateful all of our days.

I have such fond memories of her reading Charlotte's Web to the class and introducing us to so many wonderful artists. During that year, Mrs. Pirtle was also in a horrible auto accident. She bounced back and continued the school year as our beloved teacher. I stopped by the school decades later and to my heart's delight, Mrs. Pirtle was still there. She was teaching art and we had a nice visit. She even remembered me and my family.
My condolences are with all those she leaves behind. Rest In Peace, Mrs. Pirtle. Thank you for sharing your gifts. less
