Mary Elizabeth Borzelleca, 90, died as she lived - quietly and peacefully, surrounded by family - on February 11, 2022. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, and moved to Richmond in 1959 when her husband, Dr. Joseph F. Borzelleca, accepted a position at the Medical College of Virginia. In their 67 years of marriage, Mary and Joseph explored the world and created a warm, welcoming home.
Mary will be remembered for her gentleness, soft voice, quiet and charming demeaner, love of people and nature (especially birds), and compassion. She was nonjudgmental and accepting of everyone. Mary had a keen sense of humor, and was creative, artistic, and musical. She was a student of the arts who cherished her time in the museums and cathedrals of Europe, and who knew the many sites of Rome like a tour guide. Her delicious meals were savored by many. Her empathy, generosity and strong Catholic faith were the foundations of her life and work, from raising her children and running the family to volunteering for numerous charitable organizations, including St. Bridget’s Parish and St. Mary’s Hospital.
Mary was the heart of the family she tenderly nurtured and fiercely protected. She is survived by six children who adored her: Joseph Jr. (Ellen Brock), Paul (Marlena Hobson), David (Susan), Michael (Gretchen), Terri (Paul Fad), and Marc (Joseph Miska). She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Matthew Borzelleca (Megan), Daniel Borzelleca (Whitney), Nolan Borzelleca (Erin), Katherine Borzelleca, Rebecca Borzelleca, Connor Fad, and Ryan Fad; and her great-granddaughters Elizabeth, Ariel, Mary Carter, and Harper.
The family acknowledges with gratitude the compassionate care of Mary by Ms. Ginny Poole, Ms. Ada Clinton, CNA, Ms. Anne C.
