I had been trying to reach him for many years and finally reconnected with him in December of 2018. We had a couple of phone conversations, the last one being in January of 2019. I texted him on his birthday of that same year but never heard back, and also tried calling him on several occasions but to no avail. My daughter did a deep dive search for him and that’s when I received the terrible news of his passing. Mike and I go way back, having first met at St. John’s College in 1975. We became great friends over the year and a half that I attended there. Some of my fondest memories of Mike were of playing baseball together for St. John’s, going to a Montrose/Foghat concert in Wichita, his spending Thanksgiving of 1975 with my family in Cheyenne, participating in a baseball trip to Texas in the Spring of 1976, and countless other great times. That great friendship continued with both of us attending Concordia College in St. Paul, MN. We were roommates there for a trimester before I returned home to Wyoming and he returned back to Oswego. The last time I saw Mike in person was when he came out to Cheyenne to visit me in April of 1977. We had only a couple of phone conversations over the rest of our lives, and I truly regret that we never got together again in person. He was and will always remain the best friend I ever had in college and one of my favorite people I have ever known. I am so sorry for all of your family as you lost a great and caring man. I can’t tell you how much I miss Mike and how special a person he was. I think about him often and truly wish we could have reconnected again at some point. I truly wish someone from your family would reach out to me, as I would love to pay my respects to you in person, and to further the discussion of the times Mike and I had. My phone number is 303-317-7775 if you care to reach out and allow me to pay my respects. Like Kevin said in his post: Mike truly was a “free spirit” who lived life to the fullest! I know that someday we’ll all see him again in Heaven and I look forward to it! Again, please accept my heartfelt condolences and prayers for all of you. Keep his memory alive everyday and he will always be a part of your lives until we meet him again! I have attached a photo of the two of us from our St.John’s baseball days-a regional tournament in Wichita-circa April of 1976. Also a recent photo of himself he sent me after out last phone conversation.
Sincerely, Tony Cox less
