In 2018, Nathan and Marie bought their dream home, a cabin secluded in the Clearwater mountains near Elk City, Idaho, where Nathan planned on retiring and living out his life with the love of his life. In April 2021 Nathan was diagnosed with a rare cancer, adenocarcinoma, when a tumor was found in his esophagus at the opening of the stomach. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation, plus having a stent inserted through the tumor to allow him to swallow. He lost his battle just 7 months later.
