Dr. Patricia Dorothy Moore passed away peacefully on May 26, 2020 in Tempe, Arizona, at the age of 85. She was born on December 21, 1934 in New Jersey to loving parents Frank and Dorothy Rast. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in the 1940's where Patricia attended St. Joseph’s elementary school and Xavier College Preparatory. She became a registered nurse after studying at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix. She then moved to Chicago, put herself through Loyola University and earned her bachelor’s in nursing. She fondly recounted her experience as a young public health nurse giving smallpox immunizations to people on the cold Chicago streets in the middle of winter. She was also a lifelong advocate for equal rights and in 1968 took a bus with her months old daughter Jacque to attend the Poor People’s March in Washington DC.
Patricia then moved back to the Phoenix area. She lived and worked in the town of Guadalupe for two years where she started a community health clinic with a friend and fellow nurse. She continued to work with the Guadalupe community throughout her career and into retirement on multiple public health initiatives. She returned east, married, and earned her Masters in Nursing from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She then taught part time at Arizona State University to be in Phoenix close to her sister Jacque, while raising three daughters Jacque, Michelle and Kristina.
In 1980, Patricia decided to pursue her doctorate at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in Baltimore, as a single parent, bringing along her daughters 9,10, and 11 at the time. After completing her degree, she settled back in Tempe as a Professor and then Associate Dean at ASU’s College of Nursing. She taught public health policy and impacted the lives of countless nursing, health policy and health administration students during her 23-year career at the university, and she mentored many graduate students through their research. She created positive changes in Arizona public health policy through both her research on infant and maternal health as well as her work on community health projects in Maricopa County. Patricia is survived by her daughters Jacqueline Picone and Kristina Dunne, son-in-law John Dunne, and her grandchildren Joe, Katie and Steve Russell, Matthew and Julia Picone, and Emma and Keira Dunne. She was preceded in death by her two younger sisters, Barbara and Jacqueline Rast, and her daughter Michelle Russell.
Patricia was an active member of the ASU Catholic Newman Center community for many years, and a dedicated volunteer with St. Vincent De Paul both before and after retirement. She was a kind, wise and independent woman, a leader in her community, and a role model to her daughters. She loved traveling for work and for fun, staying politically involved, was an avid reader, enjoyed hiking and rafting the Colorado river, and most of all cherished her many friends and family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and will be missed by all.
