In the early 1970's Kate left teaching and began organizing. She founded "Save our Sisters" which offered shelter for women fleeing domestic violence. She helped found Group Health Women's Caucus which brought contraceptive coverage to Group Health for the first time. She directed the University YWCA as it nurtured and then spun off the Lesbian Resource Center, the Abortion Referral Service, the NW Women's law Center, a Women in the Trades program, and a gallery for women's art.
