When visiting Silvia and Jeff in Portland, Bill slipped on a throw rug. When he grabbed for support, his thumb hit the doorknob tab, and it sliced off the nail segment of his thumb. When Jeff ran upstairs to see what had happened, Bill was sitting on the floor holding his thum and said he'd "probably need a bandaid". After X-rays and minor surgery to close the skin around the exposed bone, he admitted that a bandaid probably would not have been enough...! By the end of the day, he had befriended all the nurses and orderlies in the emergency room.
