On November 9th 1954 in McNary, Arizona, Paul and Alma Hansen welcomed Shirley Pauline into the world. “Polly” was raised with her little sister Rhonda and her five older siblings: Sonny, Douglas, Rita, Faye and Rose in the small mining town of Morenci. After high school, the next chapter in her life led her to Tucson, where she studied nursing at the University of Arizona. It wasn’t until 1975 at a Freddy Fender concert near the old smokestacks outside of Clifton when Polly introduced herself to the love of her life, a sailor named Rudy. He grew up in Clifton, down the hill from Morenci and they graduated from rival schools in the same year. While they didn’t know one another growing up only a few miles apart, they quickly fell in love and after finishing serving his time in the Navy, Rudy and Polly moved into an apartment together in Tucson and started the beginning of their life together. After spending time living in California, they decided to put down roots in Tucson and in 1980 they welcomed their first son Diego to the family and made the commitment to love each other for better or for worse. Over the next four years they added two more sons, Christopher and Alex and settled on an acre of land amongst the saguaros in Picture Rocks. Polly spent her time raising her boys with the help of her mother Alma, who moved nearby with her grandson Jeff. Her professional life was always dedicated to public service and helping others in need. Polly aided countless numbers of refugees in finding employment while working for the state. She led the Human Resources department at Playmaxx, where they made and assembled yo-yos. In her final years of service, Polly led programs with the county to help the people in her community get the resources that they need to get back on track at the One Stop Center. After a lifetime of helping others, Polly was finally able to retire from her position with the county on her 65th birthday in 2019. The next year of her life was spent relaxing in the home that her husband, Rudy, had built until he underwent emergency surgery to remove a ruptured malformation of veins and arteries from his brain. Polly spent the final years of her life caring for her husband and helping to rehabilitate him after his surgery. They spent almost every moment together from the time he came back home until she ascended to heaven in the comfort of her bed in her home at 3:00 pm on December 7, 2021. Polly joins her mother, Alma, father, Paul, brothers Sunny, Douglas and sister, Rita in the afterlife along with Rudy's parents Albert and Lili, their son Albert Jr and niece Jennifer. Polly leaves behind her husband, Rudy, sons Diego, Christopher and Alex, and sisters Faye, Rose and Rhonda along with their partners and children, her beloved nieces and nephews; Dennis, John, Janeen, Janeal, Neil, Jesse, Reanna, and all of the children they have brought into this world. Polly also leaves behind the family of the man she loved so much, Rudy's siblings; Lupe, Richard, Danny, and Cissy, along with their partners and children, her beloved nieces and nephews; Cielo, Joseph, Benjamin, Veronica, Lora, J.D, Gina and all of the children they have brought into this world. The loving and kind spirit of Polly continues to watch over all of her many friends, family and colleagues as we celebrate and honor her amazing time on this planet.
