Consistent with the vision of their founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.
St. Jude’s strives to be the world leader in advancing the treatment and prevention of catastrophic diseases in children, by providing outstanding patient care; conducting basic, translational and clinical research designed to elucidate biological mechanisms, understand disease pathogenesis, improve diagnosis, enhance treatment outcome, prevent diseases and minimize adverse consequences of treatment; and by educating health care and scientific research professionals. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. less

In the interim, we created a GatheringUs memorial to celebrate Rick Frulla’s life. Collecting stories, memories, and photos here will provide us all great comfort. This was Rick’s birthday message to my son, Gino, who turned 5 during the beginning of quarantine. Since we couldn’t have a party, we had a drive by parade and had his loved ones record their birthday wishes for him. This one is even more special now.

From the very beginning, he treated Amber and me like family, and after he and my mother married, he began introducing us as his daughters and treated us as nothing less than his own. After my mom passed, he drew us even closer, keeping a promise to my mom to “keep her family together”. Rick not only kept her memory alive for us through his love, he gave us security, a home, and a continued sense of family and belonging.
He embraced us and our family the same way he embraced all of his loved ones. In his steadfast, loyal, gentle way, he showed all of us how he valued us and loved us. Never judging, never a complaint, never an unkind word, but always practical, encouraging, and as we all know, a jokester with the best sense of humor. All were welcome at his table and invited to his feasts. We will certainly miss our Sunday dinners, game days, movie nights, holiday and birthday celebrations, and especially the daily texts checking on us and “the boys”. He spoke often of how he wished he had learned Italian when he was young. During quarantine, we started learning it together through an app, and we would practice in our texts to each other. One of the first sentences he spoke was to my boys (5,3,and 3) when he told each of them “tu sei un bravo ragazzo” which means “you are a good boy”. They thought Papa Rick was so cool...a former drummer, a motorcyclist, chef, and most of all he was always there for us. We already feel the great void of his absence from our lives. However, we know how deeply he missed his Jeannie, his brothers, his cousin, Joe, and all who passed before him. The thought of their sweet reunion brings us so much joy. So in honor of Rick, and the way he gathered us all, I hope that we can gather here stories of his time with us and the way he impacted our lives. I know it will help us to grieve the loss of such an important man. less
