Robert Dean Perkins, Jr., 71, of Tallahassee, FL passed unexpectedly on August 21, 2020. The oldest son of the late Trudie Chester Perkins and Robert Dean Perkins, Sr. he was born on July 9, 1949. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Robert Sr. and Trudie, his brother Reggie Perkins and his sisters, Loretta Perkins-Speed and Mildred Chester Johnson.
Robert was educated at the public schools of Leon County. Robert attended Bond Elementary, Nims Jr. High and the original Lincoln High School, also known is Old Lincoln. Affectionally known as “Perk”, he was an academic scholar and consistently excelled in mathematics and chemistry. He was one of only a few local students to participate in the Symposium on Science & Engineering at the University of Florida, during his junior and senior years. A letterman in varsity football, Robert graduated from Lincoln High in 1967.
Robert continued his education at Florida A&M University and immersed himself in the Civil Rights movement of the 60’s. Robert was a founding member and Chair of the Malcolm X United Liberation Front, a revolutionary organization that fought for the self-determination of the Black community. A brilliant orator, Robert was known for his exciting speeches as Chair of the Front.
Robert Perkins was married to the former Beverly Jones in 1968. To this union, 3 children were born. Robert later fathered a fourth child.
Robert was also a radio and television personality. He developed, co-produced and hosted Vibrations, a weekly show that aired on WFSU and focused on issues affecting the Black Community. He later moved to Washington D.C. to produce documentaries and shows for public television. He also served as a floor director for the historic Million Man March in 1995. After returning home, he continued work in video/tv production, until his retirement.
On Friday August 21, 2020, God Almighty summoned Reggie home for his eternal rest. His relatives and friends will forever cherish precious memories of his life and legacy. Robert is survived by ex-wife: Beverly Perkins; one daughter: Felicia Perkins; three sons: Chaka Perkins, Jamil Perkins of Tallahassee, FL and Zedikiah Faltz of Middleton, NY; five grandchildren: Micheal Perkins of Washington D.C., Kenneth Williams of Tallahassee, FL and Kasamba Kokayi, Jumaane Kokayi, Zenzele Kokayi all of St. Petersburg, FL; − one sister: Jacqueline (Samuel Randolph) Perkins; one brother: Romerio (Sharon) Perkins of Tallahassee, FL; nieces and nephews: William (Daphnee) Rouse, Jr., Ila (Ariel) Perkins-Escoto, Roy (Kristen) Mathis Jr., Sharisse Perkins, Yolanda D. Speed and Willie James Speed, III and a host of other relatives.
