« DANCE JOKE PLAY MUSIC WITH FAMILY
AND EVEN STRANGERS...UNITES US ALL….» — Rolly Rock
Roland Zoël Joachim Joseph Roch (1951-2021)
Winnipeg has sadly lost a great and talented musician, Roland Roch, also known as Rolly Rock, has left us on march 30th after many years of cancer, in his home in Saint-Boniface only a few days after his 70th birthday. He was an honest man, proud, strong, loyal, intelligent and determined who possessed charm and charisma, silly humour and outstanding unforgettable talent.
Born in Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, in 1951, in the house his Great Grand-Father built in 1912, Rolly spent his youth on the farm beneath rural skies. Raised by his beloved parents, Emmanuel and Blanche, he grew up in a Catholic household who prayed together and valued honesty, fidelity, and justice. The third of four children, Robert, Lorraine, himself, and Norman, he learned how to work hard and cultivated a deep appreciation for music due to a small radio given to him by his uncle. This radio captured music from the States and all the way across the ocean. His mother gave him his first guitar with which he learned, on his own, to sing and play to later become the Musical Legend we know today: Rolly Rock. We’ve even written songs about him:(« Roland T. Bon! » french version of « Johnny B.Good » by Edwin Prince and the Louis Boys.)
As a young man, he studied to become a teacher at the University of Saint Boniface. In the very first St-B Cultural Center, he met Gisèle Saurette, the eldest of a Catholic family of eleven children, raised in the same set of values. They fell in love, married and had four children of their own, Lizanne, Joël, Francine and Nicole. Roland taught both elementary and high school levels, he taught guitar to anyone willing to learn, studied Karate, and was a devoted artist who practiced daily and continued diligently to study music deeply throughout his entire life. After 15 years of marriage, by mutual choice, separated and moved only a couple of blocks to remain close to his beloved children. Always concerned with their well being, he was just as proud of his seven Grand-Children: Aveline, Felix, Julian, Didier, Isidore, Benoît and Zoë.
He had important lovers throughout the years, including Suzanne Châtelain and another sweet woman of whom we will not mention the name. He developed a very strong driven passion for Blues Music. He could improvise and play with anybody. He played with a multitude of talented musicians throughout the years, in many bands, all over the city, and in rural Manitoba. He’s well known throughout musical circles in Winnipeg, and a source of inspiration for others, be they musicians, colleagues or spectators. Rolly's unique talent as a Live Singer-Lead Guitarist blew away anyone who had the honour to witness, referred to as a «Guitar God» because he played so intensely, so delicately with superb focus, he played his heart and soul out on stage…
He was predeceased by his parents, Emmanuel et Blanche Roch, and his older brother Robert. Left grieving, are his older sister Lorraine (Raymond) LeMoullec, his younger brother Normand, sister-in law Hélène Gaudreau (Robert), his children, Lizanne (Sven), Joël, Francine (Olivier) and Nicole (Stephan), their mother Gisèle Saurette-Roch , her brothers & sisters and their spouses, many nieces and nephews: Micheline (his God-child), Hélène, and Jean Roch, Lise, Marc, Serge, René, Stéfane Lemoullec, their spouses, and many more nieces and nephews Saurette, Wells, Evans, and Brunn, their spouses, his beloved grand-children, Aveline, Felix, Julian, Didier, Isidore, Benoît & Zoë, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He will be forever cherished in our hearts.
Rolly was a powerful musician, gifted with an impeccable ear, he knew how to enjoy the good things in life, shared his talents, his wisdom, his knowledge and his love. He was a tender man, tough and fearless. Like many artists , often misunderstood by his loved ones. Frankness, candour and intolerance for lies and injustices brought about much conflict for him in his life for he was Defender of Great Truth. His dedication, devotion and contribution to music is immeasurable for it lives within us, in the hearts and the fleeting moments of those he touched, and because it will continue to affect us throughout our lives. He connected people to each other, and uttermost profoundly within themselves. He was the best showman I’ve ever seen perform live. I am honoured to be his daughter. I keep with me, his tenderness, wisdom, and courage.
Brazilians have a word in Portuguese that best describes my sentiment. This word does not exist in english or in my maternal french language. It is «saudade»(sao-da-gee)…Eu tem muito saudade….This does not mean I miss him…for he is not missing from me. I carry his love within me, always. His music resounds in my mind with every song I hear. It is because his love completes me that I will never be missing anything. No, saudade means to yearn, to long for someone to be near when it is impossible. To love from far away and yet most deeply within at the same time. It is a beautiful feeling one must cherish, a feeling I know all too well.
Throughout everything, my Father, Roland Zoël Roch, was a good man, a remarkable human being who lived a long, rich life full of marvellous and magical experiences, guided by his heart of pure love. Let us keep his essence fondly close to ours.
I leave you with a few of the last words he wrote to me:
« NICE MEMORIES SURE ARE NICE FOR AN
APPRECIATIVE SOUL WHO THANKS HIS
CREATOR...TEACH YOUR CHILDREN
AND THEY WON'T STRAY FROM LOVING THEMSELVES
AND OTHERS JUST AS WELL…
DANCE JOKE PLAY MUSIC WITH FAMILY AND EVEN
STRANGERS...UNITES US ALL….» — Rolly Rock
Rest in peace, Rolly, son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grand-father, friend, teacher, lover, transcendental musician………… mon Papa..…..
