Ruby was born on November 28, 1927 to the union of Willie Bea Cochran and Mary Edna Abbott. She was the second eldest of eight children. As a child, Ruby attended McKinley Elementary School and Thornton High School in Harvey Illinois. Ruby met the love of her life Rayfield and was married in December of 1945, in Muskegon, Michigan. Out of this union came 7 wonderful children, five boys, Ronald, Doyle, Andre, Derek and Terrence and two girls, Joyette and Princess.
On February 6, 2021 at 5:30 am Ruby was peacefully called home while in the company of her granddaughters, in Oakland, CA at the home of Monica, Mashika, Melody and Chloe’s. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents: Willie Bea Cochran and Mary Edna Abbott; husband: Rayfield Johnson; daughters: Joyette McCrae and Princess Simmons; sons: Doyle Johnson, Andre Dallas Johnson and Derek Johnson; grandsons: John Manners, Terrence Evans; brothers: James Abbott (Robbie), Charles Abbott" Murphy"; Donald Abbott, twin brothers: Harold and Harrison Abbott, Willie Cochran, jr. Fredrick Cochran; sister: Ruth Reed, Anna Mae Cunningham, Edna Fitch Green; sister-in-law: Dolly Sullivan.
Ruby worked as an elevator operator in Grand Rapids, Michigan in her early adult years for a short while. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Ruby was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family, friends, and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. She regularly brought meals to the home of sick neighbors. And she always ensured that every child who crossed her threshold was safe, healthy, and happy. In her spare time, she enjoyed entertaining and being in the company of her kids. Ruby enjoyed going to church and listening to gospel music at home.
Ruby is survived by her sons, Ronald Johnson and Terrence Johnson, a host of grandchildren; sister: Suzanne Cochran; Sister-in-laws: Ann (Babe) Abbott, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and many loving friends.
To God Be the Glory for Blessing Ruby with 93 years!
The Lord Is My Shepherd
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
