Dear friends and family,
As you may have heard, Steve suffered a severe stroke recently while visiting his daughter and grandchildren following the sudden and tragic loss of his son-in-law.
He received excellent care from the staff at UC Davis Medical Center through his intensive treatment and then through his time in hospice.
Steve passed peacefully on the evening of Jan 17th with his wife of nearly 50 years by his side and surrounded by the love of his family and all of you who have kept him in your thoughts and prayers.
As a poppa, dad, brother, friend, teacher, and husband, Steve impacted countless lives. While we already miss him deeply, the love and wisdom that he shared will live on through all of us. Thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers for Steve and his wife, Ruth. We love you all.
Please feel free to share any thoughts or memories of Steve that you would like leave for his family.

I was 15 years old and he was my youth pastor in high school. Now, at 65 it's difficult to learn that Steve passed away today, January 17, a few years back.
I hope Ruthie and their family know that Steve was a good man and church leader. I think he was a recent graduate of Biola University and a surfer from Santa Cruz when I knew him.
He loved God and shared Him with people from all walks of life. This was a time when the Jesus Movement had taken place at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa. It opened the door to hippies that left a dead-end life for a new beginning, a new birth.
My sister Cindy, joined their Bible Study in 1973 when Greg Laurie lead the weekly group. She and her husband were married by Lonnie Frisbee, the evangelist God used to reach that lost generation.
I think Steve got on-board and rode the wave. less

He preached on the prayers of the pharisee and the tax collector from Luke 18. I remember feeling like I was the only one in the chapel and that he was speaking directly to me. He spoke with such clarity, passion, and most of all, love for his listeners. A year later I began at Western Seminary and got to be in his classes. I signed up for one course almost every semester I attended, and after each one I walked away feeling more equipped to pastor and much more in love with Jesus. He was a mentor, a pastor-teacher, and a friend, and I was so happy that he and Ruthie attended our wedding. I am overwhelmingly grateful for his influence and encouragement in my life. Ruthie, Bekah and I will continue to pray for you. We love you. less

His down-to-earth friendliness was an invitation to seek guidance with him and Ruthie during some of the most painful transitions in my life, and he always had an encouraging word for me, even though I wasn't one of his students. A few days ago, when I was about to share some comforting words in this portal, I realized I also need to be comforted. Then one of Steve's books, "Coming to Your Senses" crossed my mind. I have been reading this book several times and I am quoting a few of his words here ... something that has reminded me of Steve and his impacts on my life.
"While the Christian life guarantees everlasting life, we tend to keep it in our back pocket until we need it - good insurance, but not important until there is a disaster; until the life we cherish is threatened... If we see ourselves as earthly creatures and heaven is a foreign place, lacking all the creature comforts of this world, why would we ever want to go there? But if we're not excited about heaven, then we probably don't want to go there, or even think about it... If our concerns are limited to this physical life, change is reduced to the pursuit of self-improvement and life enhancement... confined to life as we know it, they lack a larger context; a context that serves as a necessary element of the change God intends for us. ...The change God desires to produce in us is tied to a larger story. Our awareness of that larger story redefines everything... God calls us to look beyond this world to find the answers to our deepest questions, as well as context and perspective for our present circumstances."
These words comfort me and remind me about the many hours that I am with Steve. I am sure he is having a great time in heaven, awaiting for us to join him. Until then, I still miss you, Steve.

Steve encouraged me in the 80's to continue my path into ministry when I was a young and hyper youth ministry intern.
Steve hired me as the youth pastor in the 90's where in one week we flew in a Russian airline cockpit, preached in a woman's prison, spoke to all the teachers in a public school and had dinner in the home of communist officer. It was a privilege to be in Jess's, Holly's and Trav's lives as they went through their teenage years.
In the 2000's he hooded me when I finally finished my masters, and accepted me as a peer when I began teaching with him at Western Seminary.
He has been in my life for so many years, and has been a constant support, encourager, challenger and friend.
Ruthie, Jess, Holly and Trav - I don't need to tell you amazing Steve is, you already know. I just want you to know how much he has helped me, taught me, laughed with me and challenged me along the way. We love you all. Steve's life will always be treasured by us.

As I've thought about writing you, I've wrestled with how to express the feelings I have about Steve as a seminary colleague, fellow spiritual warrior and friend. And so I thought of qualities that marked his life: he was an overcomer; a sincere and faithful colleague; a devoted husband, father, grandfather; an accomplished churchman and an able trainer of future Christian influencers; a fine writer and speaker; and he was resilient. As he has been on my mind for several days, I've come to think the essence of these words from Isaiah perhaps capture him best:
"The Lord has given me the tongue of disciples,
that I may sustain the weary one with a word."
His art was in his words, and his words carried a sustaining and healing weight. It's what made conversing with him, even in those tough days that come to all of us, a joy. Today, in writing this, I realize I hadn't seen him in a few years. And yet, I missed him and his words. They lifted the soul of a weary, now former seminary president, more than a few times.
I'm sad he didn't have more days to experience who and what he truly loved . . . Sharing life with you, Ruthie . . . Hanging with kids and grandkids . . . Joy in the solitude of writing . . . And training another generation or two of pastors and Christian workers. Nevertheless, he has left an indelible mark for God and good in the lives of so many . . . A life well-lived and well-invested.
You are each much on my heart and in my prayers as you make the long journey through the days ahead. May the thoughts and words of Savior Jesus, as well as of your precious Steve, sustain you.

Steve Korch was a great Seminary Professor sharing his wisdom and experience. I never forget how when he heard that I was part Swedish and how he drove a mustang with his Swedish flag on it. I remember the prayer retreat he took on our class in Los Altos, which inspired me to continue to do prayer retreats once a month. It was truly a blessing to have him put my graduation hood on me, what a great moment. I enjoy listening to his sermons on youtube from the Crossing at CFCC in Hayward. He was a gentle, loving, and compassionate man of faith that reflected the Gospel. I am truly grateful that I had chance to know him and I will miss him.
My heart and prayer goes out to Steve’s family during this difficult time. I pray that God will comfort them with his loving arms. I pray that they will be filled with loving memories. I pray that they will be filled with the hope that Steve has now gone home to be with his Lord and Savior. less

Many times he would say to me, "Let's see how we can make that happen." Someone who made coming into the office a great pleasure. One fun memory I have of Steve is how every year during VBS he would be in the story hut telling bible truths to children dressed in a bible time costume. That is memory I will always treasure as a Children's Pastor. Steve and Ruthie stood beside me during the hardest time of my life, when I said goodbye to my parents. More than just a boss, a friend. Such great encouragers in my life. I remember a verse that meant a lot to Steve. Zephaniah 3:17 The Lord takes great delight in you. Well done Steve, good and faithful servant.
My heart goes out to you Ruthie, Jessica, Holly and Travers and all the precious grandchildren. Love, Judy Basye less

He would also affirm and encourage us to follow God's leading, pointing out how God has uniquely placed us in our current circumstances.
I did not have much interaction with Dr. Korch as my faculty advisor but a recent incident came to mind. He emailed me an apology that he mistakenly approved a class I registered for. While I can't remember the dates and places -- I still remember strongly the impression that Steve, and his sharing of Scripture left on me. Steve's conviction about the Word was clear -- and the tangible and personal ways he spoke about Jesus, showed just how real their relationship was. Steve encouraged those who heard him to follow Christ wholeheartedly, by leading through example; in the kind, honest, and gentle way he carried himself. The Lord saved me when I was in college, and through a mutual friend, Nicole Lee, I was introduced to First Baptist Church of San Mateo in the 90's. I heard Pastor Steve preach and the Bible came alive for me. I had never heard the word of God so clear before. After that, I enjoyed my college years at First B with some of the best friends in Christ I have ever known. I grew so much under Pastor Steve and the other pastor/mentors on staff. Got involved in drama ministry, VBS, and the college group. I miss those days so much, even now, many years later, all under the shepherding of Pastor Steve. I enjoyed our times laughing, mentoring in his office, asking advice. His sermons were always right on point, easy to follow, sprinkled with humor and truth.

I remember always feeling nervous when I had his class because he would call on people to share their experiences and thoughts on what he taught. It pushed me to be prepared and engage more deeply with the material. One class that particularly stood out to me was when he taught on "chesed"- the all encompassing, powerful love of God. His passion for getting us to truly believe what this love meant was incredibly impactful.
