MATLACK WILLIAM F.
Age 91, of Cranberry Twp., passed away at his residence at Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community in Cranberry Twp. on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Born August 23, 1928, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late David Johnson Matlack and Emily Fawley Matlack. MATLACK WILLIAM F.
Age 91, of Cranberry Twp., passed away at his residence at Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community in Cranberry Twp. on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Born August 23, 1928, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late David Johnson Matlack and Emily Fawley Matlack. Bill earned his B.A. from Haverford College, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a professor at the University of Pittsburgh for 38 years in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, where he authored two textbooks and numerous articles, and was a Senior Fulbright Fellow from 1982 to 1983 at Bogazici University in Turkey. He was a member of the Quaker Meeting at both Sherwood Oaks and in Shadyside, and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Bill leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Margaret Katherine Matlack, Donald Sutherland Matlack (Linda), and Amelia Matlack Hamarman (Jorge); his six grandchildren, Rachel, Mica, Sonya, Boaz, Lily and Izzy; and his brother, David R. Matlack (Marge). In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Leslie Crawford Matlack, who passed away on March 9, 2020; his previous wife, Patricia A. Travis, who passed away in 2001; his daughter, Elizabeth Sutherland Matlack; and his sister, Ann Matlack Bucher. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Camp Dark Waters, P.O. Dear Don,
There is little more that I can add to the letter I sent to Amelia, Amy I think, at the time of your father’s death. But I want everyone to know how much I appreciated the tributes to Bill and how much they recalled what I wrote in March “one of the best friends I was ever privileged to have known.”
Winnie Davies’s remarks brought back the happy senior year at Haverford when Bill and I were roommates. And, yes, I too have a copy of “1066 and All That” that Bill introduced me to. We shared many jokes about Thruthelthrolth and “Good things” along with a thousand other zanies. The car Winnie referred to was a 1940 (?) Chrysler club coupe that Bill’s father had loaned him that we called Tikki Tikki Tambo and that ferried all of us roommates on dates at one time or another. What wonderful memories!
And that’s what I want to thank you for, the wonderful memories that even imperfect technology could not obscure. I regret so much that I couldn’t share in the tributes as I had wanted to. The service was a splendid memorial to a dear man whose life and memory moved so many of you watching to tears and eloquence. What a fitting and loving tribute.

Bill was first and foremost kind. He was also bright, funny, giving, engaging, interesting and interested. We are so thankful that we had him in our lives. We loved him and miss him terribly. Christie and Jim
