She answered to many names and they all fit her perfectly: Madre, Mama, Lola, Lala, Ah Ah, La, Tita Yvonne, Auntie Von. Her generosity, selflessness, kind heart and tenacity touched everyone around her. Her fierce love and protectiveness for her family, incredible work ethic, her constant support and encouragement was the heart of our family. She always put others first.
Ever since we were kids, she loved to hear every detail about our day, she would rub our backs and sing to us (“oh what a beautiful morning” “que sera sera” and "Bahay Kubo" were some of her favorites). She would turn on the music and make us dance in the living room. She loved the Sound of Music and Lawrence Welk and had a multitude of records and books.
She was strong, having experienced World War II as a child, watching dog fights in the sky, suffering through internment camps and being separated from her family. She went to school and became a home economics teacher before she and our dad came to the United States. They arrived with very little and two pieces of luggage. They wanted a good life for their family. She finally worked at Shriners hospital for nearly twenty years because she loved working with children and made lasting friendships. She would come home with stories of resilience and gratitude.
She survived the death of our beloved dad from cancer, having a triple bypass, a stroke and endured dialysis for years. To say that she was tough as nails is an understatement. Anyone who knew her, knew that she was a feisty, but loving Filipino mom, who would yell at us in Tagalog or threaten us to behave with a spoon. She was so encouraging and supportive, forever saying “go for it” in whatever we wished to pursue. She continued to do the same with her beloved grandchildren, Paige and Jesse. And boy, was she a fantastic cook.
We're just incredibly grateful for all of the sacrifices she made to give us a truly blessed and wonderful life. Thank you to all of our family and friends, near and far, who have been such a special and supportive part of Mom’s life. She made truly wonderful memories with each of you. What brings the most comfort to us is that she has joined our sweet dad in heaven. She has missed him so much. We love you mom. You blessed us as a phenomenal mom, wife and grandmother. You can finally Rest In Peace.

I wish I could have been there. I've been absolutely heart broken, and seeing all of your love and recalling the beautiful memories comforts me. Moms Grit, Perseverance, Compassion & Love will continue to shine within our spirits, and we shall continue to feel the warmth of her presence during our entire life times. I feel happiness that she is now cradled within the loving "Angel Wings" of dad, and that her light will continue to shine upon us, till we are all reunited once again in Heaven.
