One of the things that Barbara did best was make the ordinary into an imagination adventure. We often cooked or baked, but if Barbara was involved, it turned into a magical, creative process. One of my favorite baking memories is when I was visiting around Thanksgiving. We made sugar cookies...not just any kind though....turkey cookies. We had various frostings, candy corns for the feathers (...or other features??), and other items to decorate the rest of the bird...eyes, feet...or maybe shoes and a hat? The options were endless in the land of Barbara's imagination. Getting them ready to serve involved a beautiful serving platter, with wonderings of who would choose which cookie, considerations of if we would need to market the cookies to those who were less interested, how many would be eaten. Discussions were had about how to properly be a host, serve the cookies in the most fancy way and hear what our 'customers' preferences might be. What might be an ordinary event was infused with creativity, imagination, kindness and interpersonal skills. The turkey cookies were of course, a hit!
