Marcus left us too early, so we offer this space as an opportunity for people to share memories, photographs, videos, thoughts, and prayers for a man who will forever be in our hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, September 24 at 9am. This event will be available for viewing online to allow us all the opportunity to honor our dear friend.
Marcus Lamar Price was born in Turlock, California to his loving parents Sherryl and Jerome Price. He grew up with his older brother and sister, Jerome Price Jr. and Kishina Price.
A proud Turlock hometown guy, Marcus attended Osborn Elementary School, Turlock Junior High School, and Turlock High School. Over the years, Marcus competed in a variety of different sports including baseball, golf, soccer, and track. During high school, Marcus competed in varsity track and field. His events were high jump, long jump, and triple jump, and he currently still holds records for all three events at Turlock High School. Throughout high school, his love for civics and community blossomed as a varsity speech and debate club member in addition to serving as the student representative for Turlock Unified School District’s School Board. He graduated from high school in 2006 with honors. He was known as a welcoming and joyful person on campus, which was a reputation that he kept for the rest of his life.
After high school, Marcus went on to study Political Science at the University of California Santa Barbara. He established lifelong friends there and met the love of his life, Ashley Pangelinan. Marcus picked up many things over his time at college. He developed a love for competing in video games amongst other things, he began to cook for himself and friends, he would oftentimes lose his bikes on campus, and then went on to ride his skateboard instead. Oftentimes, Marcus would love to tag along for little adventures out on the town or to other nearby destinations. Most of all, Marcus loved to live in the moment. Marcus was never far from a laugh, a giggle, or a debate. He loved spending quality time with friends.
He established a career of being a champion for civic engagement training youth, elderly, and people with disabilities on issues of education, voting, and many other social services. He worked and served for an AmeriCorps program, City Year San José, from 2011-2013, mentoring and leading after school programs for elementary school students. He then went on to be a project leader for corps development. He spent a short time working for Employment Opportunities San José from 2013-2014 where he helped people with disabilities develop work and life skills throughout the city of San José. He then did a short stint at Google in Mountain View as a contractor for Human Resources. Realizing that his heart was more invested in public service, he moved on to work as an election specialist at the Registrar of Voters for Santa Clara County in 2014. He loved his time with the ROV training election poll workers and spending long nights and weekends tallying votes after elections. He most recently transitioned to Santa Clara County Social Services as a staff development specialist. He was passionate about training delivery design and was experimenting with different modes of training gamification. His legacy will live on through training videos he recorded with Santa Clara County Social Services which always ended with his signature dab move.
Marcus was a man of service and community. He went on to serve with the San José/Silicon Valley City Year Alumni Board from 2013-2016 volunteering his time to ensure that alumni and corps members had opportunities to connect and seek help in finding careers after City Year. He also volunteered with the San José African American Community Service Agency since 2018, which recognizes Marcus’ volunteerism and support over the years with regards and sympathy to his loved ones. The City Year National Alumni Organization is moving forward with how to register and engage voters in their community of corps members, staff, and alumni in his honor.
Marcus settled in the Japantown neighborhood of San José, California. He spent the majority of his adult life living in the moment and establishing a loving community of family and friends. He loved to barbeque for others, joke, play games, and have a good time. He was a thoughtful man. Marcus was a devoted and competitive sports fan who cheered for the Dallas Cowboys, Golden State Warriors, and Oakland A’s. He enjoyed listening to music and grew to have a diverse collection of vinyl records. Marcus also had a fondness for dogs, especially his beloved greyhound, T’Challa. Marcus and his wife Ashley would walk up and down the streets of their neighborhood every morning and evening to walk their dog. Over the past few years, they created and ran into many friends in their neighborhood always stopping to catch up and talk about how everything was going. He was a genuinely kind soul who cared for the wellbeing of others.
He is a follower of Christ and in his final days prayed with the Lord our God. Marcus was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Ray and Margaret Dailey, paternal grandparents Albert and Rosie Price; sister Delicia Price; uncles Jerry Thompson, Thaddeus Dailey, Kenneth Price Sr.; and aunt Annie Price.
