Steve was my cousin, but he was also my very first best friend. I have thought many times, over the past week or so, about how to capture my memories of Steve in words. He had a huge personality and presence, and to think that he is no longer with us... moreSteve was my cousin, but he was also my very first best friend. I have thought many times, over the past week or so, about how to capture my memories of Steve in words. He had a huge personality and presence, and to think that he is no longer with us in body is hard to fathom. That presence of his, though...is always with us, and that makes my heart smile.

We used to be very silly together. He was Wicky and I was Wucy. We did talent shows at Grandpa and Grandma Cecil's house. I can remember him teaching me a dance (I'm not sure if he made it up) to "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree". I haven't heard that song since without thinking of us dancing to it at Grandma's house.

I can remember his brief time at Texas A&M, before he transferred to SMU. He and I went to "Fajita Rita's" and he taught me how to really enjoy margaritas..."It's just Kool-Aid", he said. I am so glad we made it back to campus safely! Lol!

He was so talented! I asked him to make candid "party pics" for my wedding. I don't think that actual photographer appreciated it. Looking back, I am sure I should have said something to the photographer about it...but I was young and naïve...and Steve didn't care. I am thankful I asked for him to make the pictures because I have those memories. I also have the memory of Steve's face every time the wedding photographer shot him a look.

I took my kids to see him when he was visiting Aunt Billie. We had so. much. FUN! My son, Cody, especially connected with Steve. Cody is an artist himself...

I love seeing the pictures of Steve on safari in Africa. He loved adventure and he wasn't afraid of new things. I remember having to be in LA with my job. Steve took me to a Moroccan restaurant with him. I had never experienced any aspect of Moroccan culture before or since then. I wouldn't have had that experience except for Steve.

One of my last memories of Steve was when we were able to get together to spread Grandma Cecil's ashes. We met up for frozen yogurt after spreading the ashes. He was riding with Aunt Billie, and they must have taken the "scenic route", because they got to our meeting place a little later than everyone else. We were waiting outside and watched Aunt Billie pass by us once...and as she passed us again, Steve rolled down his window...I can't even begin to describe the look on his face! I laughed so hard, I nearly wet my pants!

I am thankful for Facebook where I could feel connected with Steve and his life.

As I've remembered Steve, despite feeling sadness, I am deeply grateful for having shared life with him.

Steve loved deeply. Aunt Billie, Uncle David, Priscilla, Lance, Stevie and Steve, you have been on my heart and in my prayers. You ARE in my heart and in my prayers. less

I met Steve in preschool. Ms. Jackson was holding up his bumble bee picture he colored remarking on his talent and his staying within the lines! I knew I wanted to be his friend at that moment and went to sit next to him and we were best of friends since. We had so many antics from grade school onward—from piano to disco lessons, enacting original SNL skits, laughing and playing jokes on people incessantly and driving our families crazy! We convinced people in our class that we were siblings because we were the same person!
Every time we got together over the years, we were 12 again; laughing non-stop, singing and joking. We progressed along our life journeys with a deep and constant connection. Steve was always there for me through everything. He had my back without question, and I his. He was loyal, witty, sarcastic, funny, had an infectious laugh and was just passionate about life. He loved kids, animals, the ocean, the environment and we experienced the wonder of nature together on many trips. He was an artist, a linguist, a dog dad and a true adventurer. He was always looking out for those who needed help and lifted them up to heal and see the good in themselves. He knew me like no one else and he met all of the important people in my life and was a part of me. We had movie marathons for hours while we drank champagne and wine to celebrate life.
My heart goes out to his many friends and family. He was one of a kind with an unparalleled sense of humor and knowing he was so well loved brings me comfort. The world will miss his light, but I know he will still be present for us. He was my dear friend, a brother, my partner in crime and my soulmate.

It is rare to find an individual that knows you so well and that you can rely on and connect with throughout all the instances in your life. I was his family.

11 years ago i walked up to @pilateswithwood at equinox and told him he had no choice but to take me on as a client and train me. He had been dodging my 78 calls and was fully booked & didn’t have time to train me but he couldn’t get over how bossy and insistent i was so he took me on. From the moment we met we had an instant connection and we rapidly became friends. He helped me heal from a surgery and helped me navigate through some ups and downs i was going through. Alejandro was so jealous that i got to spend time with Steve that he also started training with him and developed his own friendship. Pilates is part of my daily life bc of Steve. For 11 years I was privileged and lucky enough to spend time with this magnificent soul. He spent countless birthdays with us, holidays and so many random Tuesday nights watching lifetime movies with me. Steve would make me laugh so hard to the point that i would have water shooting out of my nose. Everyone who met him adored him. He made u feel special. He listened and asked questions. He made you feel seen. we always talked about going to Italy one day and eating our way through it. Eating a meal with Steve was an experience and a true luxury. Steve and i deeply bonded over our similar sense of humor and basically hating all the same things. anytime i would be around him or hear from him my mood would instantly get better and brighter.
On Sunday i found out Steve passed away. I’m still in a state of shock and can’t comprehend that i won’t be getting a txt from him, a missed call and i wont hear his infections laugh. I can’t understand that on Christmas he won’t be sitting at our dinning room table eating all the food and somehow never getting full. He was one of the best men i have ever met and it was an honor to love him all these years. He was a mentor, a friend and our family. He was too good for this earth. I am absolutely gutted and heartbroken. I will miss you every single day Esteban. Make sure to save me a seat next to you. I will see you again mi amor. P.S. to everyone reading this please wear a mask. Let’s take care of one another.

Steve Wood did not have enough years on this earth, but he lived the time he had more fully than just about anyone I’ve ever known. It is shocking, devastating, unthinkable that he is gone. When you were with Steve, you felt seen. When you talked to him, he was so engaged, you always left feeling connected. Special. What a gift to give another person: Your complete, genuinely interested attention. He was the type of person who could talk to anyone, make someone he’d just met feel like a lifelong friend. Parents raise their kids to be like Steve so naturally was, the one who looks for the person at a party who doesn’t know anyone, the kid alone at the lunch table, and makes it their mission to befriend them; not out of pity, but because he wants to know them. He came to every show, was the first to comment on any video, quoted lines you wrote to you years after he’d seen them. You could run into him and in less than five seconds, be hearing a story about rappelling down a cave in Vietnam. He was as hilarious as he was present. He traveled the world and connected with anyone who crossed his path. He was one of my biggest champions of SLOP, which was hilarious in and of itself because he was a trainer to the stars who could whip someone’s soul in shape as much as their bodies; I watched firsthand as he helped bring a dear friend back to herself, rediscover her power and worth and value after trauma, through Pilates. (He was ALWAYS in on the joke.) He was a soap opera star. He was a devoted dog dad to Lupo Sprinkles and loyal friend and I am gutted that he is gone. I share @jeaniebergen’s wish for you: In honor of Steve’s life, put your phone down and live in this moment, right here, right now. Give your loved ones your undivided attention so fully they feel SEEN. Wear your mask, because each and every number you see on the news is a person who is loved, who leaves a hole in the universe when they are gone. This one life is so fragile and precious - rappel down it, sweat for your health but not the small shit, look for a reason to laugh and you will always find it, take every chance to tell people you love them. Steve, you are so deeply missed ♥️
