Susan Elizabeth Brewster was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. She also lived in Holland, and across various parts of Canada. She spent many more happy years in Edmonton, where she passed away from a short battle with cancer on April 12, 2020 at the age of 70.
A quick-witted jokester, she always found angles to ponder and jokes to make. She actively supported independent musicians and theatre. She was also possibly one of the most well-read people you've ever met—with the overflowing bookshelves to prove it. She met many of her closest friends through her decades of book clubs.
Susan was a registered public health nurse for over 35 years. She dedicated her career to helping individuals and families maintain dignity, independence, and continuity through end-of-life support services via home care.
Susan is survived by her daughters, Megan Pau (Kari Pau), and Colleen Cate Shaw (Pete Ferenczi). She joins mother Cathy Brewster, predeceased by 9 years (2011), and granddaughter Ophelia Aihui Pau, predeceased by 8 years (2012). Her immediate family includes Frank and Miranda Pau, father George Brewster (Joy Brewster), brother Pierce Brewster (Pat Ishkanian), sister Ruth Hardy, and brother Bob Brewster (Yenney Perea). Her nieces and nephews include Jenn Brewster (Drew Towers, Bodhi, Gabriella), Amanda Brewster (Barry Keibel), Leslie Rose (Arthur Rose), Ian Hardy, and Melinda Brewster.
Susan was cremated according to her wishes, and there will be no specific physical resting place. Those wishing for a designated space to pay their respects are asked to visit their local library (on re-opening) to choose material to enjoy in her memory. Susan was a long-time, avid supporter for public libraries and literacy. Her gift is felt most strongly in her daughters’ love for writing.
