Covid-19 outbreak has become a global pandemic affecting over 200 countries and wiping out nations. It has taken lives of more New Yorkers than 9/11. We these virtual memorials because we cannot meet in person and embrace those around us. However on April 1, 2020 terrifying statistics became a sobering reality. It ripped away from us a giant of a person who we all cherished and left a hole that would be hard to fill.
It is common for people to realize what a loss the person was after they pass. But Tarlach was an exception- we all knew how lucky and blessed we were to have him in our lives and appreciated every moment of it while he was alive. This loss is devastating. In minutes after his passing, the world has become a little darker and a little colder. We want to make sure that we will make it better by helping to keep Tarlach’s light shining bright by sharing our memories of him.
This poem by Brian Patten was shared during the Memorial bu his brother Brandan Nellis - which suited Tarlach to a tee
How long does a man live after all?
A thousand days or only one?
One week or a few centuries?
How long does a man spend living or dying
and what do we mean when we say gone forever?
Adrift in such preoccupations, we seek clarification.
We can go to the philosophers
but they will weary of our questions.
We can go to the priests and rabbis
but they might be busy with administrations.
So, how long does a man live after all?
And how much does he live while he lives?
We fret and ask so many questions -
then when it comes to us
the answer is so simple after all.
A man lives for as long as we carry him inside us,
for as long as we carry the harvest of his dreams,
for as long as we ourselves live,
holding memories in common, a man lives.
His lover will carry his man's scent, his touch:
his children will carry the weight of his love.
One friend will carry his arguments,
another will hum his favourite tunes,
another will still share his terrors.
And the days will pass with baffled faces,
then the weeks, then the months,
then there will be a day when no question is asked,
and the knots of grief will loosen in the stomach
and the puffed faces will calm.
And on that day he will not have ceased
but will have ceased to be separated by death.
How long does a man live after all?
A man lives so many different lengths of time.
Thank you all for finding time to celebrate the life of a great man. This hole in our hearts is too big to fill. But our memories and stories help us stay together when all hope is gone. So please feel free to share photos, articles, stories on the following pages. Please view the videos we have shared.
When this pandemic is finally over, we will get together for a face to face celebration because Tarlach would love us to do so and so would we!
Bar tour, Karaoke, are some of the items on to do list that day- a big sleepover at Juan’s is another! REST IN POWER, TARLACH!
